A woman lawyer wants the age of consent lowered to 13

The law is just messed up anyway. Think about it: you can't drink until you're 18, but you can have sex when you're 16. And you're not allowed to drive until you're 17. Would love to know the reasoning behind all this.

So ... where I 16 ...

I couldn't have a drink with my girlfriend, though I can shag her, but 9 months later I cant drive her to hospital because obviously a car is more responsibility than a baby. Genius. :D

I am not advocating changing these laws, to be honest anyone that thinks dropping the age of consent to 13 should have to see a therapist. And most 17 year olds don't seem mature enough to drive responsibly, let alone younger.

I would like to see the decriminalisation of those under 16 having a bit of fun between the sheets though, as long as its similer ages. Same with alcohol, drinking at 16 shouldn't be flat out illegal who here wasnt having the odd drink at that age?. All we are doing now is making it harder for kids to do the things openly and responsibly, which is where things go wrong.

Has anyone read the article?

Hewson is advocating a reduction in the age of consent for the sole purpose of letting old men who have committed sexual assaults on pre-16 year old girls in the past escape prosecution.

Having read the original article that isn't what she is saying at all. She actually gives no explanation of what lowering the age of consent would be for.

Another issue is that I'm sure it's affecting certain segments of the population more than most.

Little stacey growing up see's 'er mum Jade pushing prams with scraped back hair and having a wonderful time claiming to support a meagre lifestyle. What hope does the kid have?

Why can women not rape? Simply because they can't penetrate? What if they took out a massive ***** and rammed it up your rectum. Would that be rape?

No it wouldn't, it would be sexual assault.

Technically only a male can rape someone as I believe the legislation specifically refers to a male's member! Sexual assault covers everything else.

Practically there's no real difference between rape and sexual assault as the punishment is the same, but they are different offences.

Instead of quoting said laws currently in place, what do you suggest alternatively?

She went on to say that "touching a 17-year-old’s breast, kissing a 13-year-old, or putting one’s hand up a 16-year-old’s skirt" were not comparable to gang rapes or murders.
And?.

Saying. "The moon is made of cheese - also the sun is bigger than the earth" - doesn't make the first part true.

You believe sexually abusing a child should be a "low level misdemeanour" (assuming her quotes are accurate?).

Ie, the same level as petty theft, disorderly conduct, trespassing, vandalism, dangerous driving or smoking marijuana?.

The low-level misdemeanours with which Stuart Hall was charged are nothing like serious crime," (she said according to the article).

Regarding the above - "Stuart Hall has pleaded guilty to abusing children as young as nine years old, we think most people would agree that crimes of this nature are incredibly serious,"

no i said that "touching a 17-year-old’s breast, kissing a 13-year-old, or putting one’s hand up a 16-year-old’s skirt" were not comparable to gang rapes or murders.

having a kid (even now at 27) was enough to put me off when i was younger! but thats because i over think things and worry a lot.. plus i was shy so not exactly an early starter!

I do agree with the part jason was saying about kids (ie under 18) not being responsible for children as its usually a life of benifits (not always).. especially at below 16.. no one under 16 can support a child properly unless they have well off family! to lower the age is crazy!

BUT personally i think the 16 rule is fine, maybe 17, but tbh as has been said it doesnt do a lot of good anyway! No one is going to be stood there with thier intended partner and go.. oh.. i shouldnt do this because its the law... there may be other reasons, but doubt very much the law comes into it

im happy with it being at 16/17 for technicalities

the other laws mentioned.. i think driving should be older than sex, you can do a lot of damage with a car, but living in a rural area i would have been crippled without it at 17.
actually i think the uk has it right with drinking/sex/driving. much better than USA with usually 16 for car and drinking at 21

it seems to work in a few other countrys, and it is down to maturity levels, so I would be for it, maybe 14 years of age for both male and female, with the proper support from doctors/nurses/pharmacists, including an increase on funding for STD awareness,

its we the parents that believe our teenagers are children, they see themselves as young adults, and will act that way whatever.

on a side note, my daughter turned 13 last week, so I am speaking from the heart here

and I am so glad I put Jason2 on ignore, I just wish you guys wouldn't quote him, and feed the troll. I seriously thought he was banned already.

For old times sake... lolJason2

As for everything else, I agree about education being key, we were all horny teenagers once, and it will continue to happen until the end of time, we can't stop them, so at best we can try and make them as educated as possible.
