House alarms that don't shutup

Shoot it with your air rifle. I know the feeling. I go round and bang on the door, but obviously they aren't in, or they love to be annoyed.

Forget air rifle try a shotgun.

As I posted elsewhere (cant find it)

The alarm kept goinfg off at the factory at end of street.

I rang the police everytime and held the phone out the window so they could here it.

It got beeter for a while then started again.

I rang police and told them I was going to blow the factory up and hey presto a few weeks later the factory is engulfed in flames and burnt to the ground.
Police didn't even interview me.

If it's been going for that long then it's classed as a noise nuisance, so you should call the council noise team and let them deal with it (council noise teams can do more then the cops, and in this case if they can't get in contact with the home owner then they'll call out an electrician to disconnect the outside alarm box).

Ours done something similar recently after a powercut, turned out the battery was dead, someone had put the date on it when they changed it back in 1993 so had done rightly. New battery £15 solved the problem

Do burglar alarms actually deter burglars, anyway?

I'd imagine they would at night, if they're trying to sneak in and rob the occupants while they sleep. During the day everyone who hears it just assumes it's a fault rather than a break in.
If you had two identical looking houses, side by side, one had an alarm and the other didn't.

Which one would you break into?

The one with the alarm as they obviously must have some pretty nice belongings to warrant the alarm system.

Generalisation is totally general, that would depend on the location you live, who you live near and what schemes you have setup for such a thing.

You could indeed interpret it that way, however the risk of breaking into that house is higher, so the potential reward would need to exceed this risk, most break-ins are opportunists, who either gain entry through an open window or door.

About 20 years ago, some neighbours down our road set up a burglar alarm that sounded like a dog barking. You could hear it in the next street. This went on for about a day. The police received complaints about the house and they broke into it to stop the alarm. It's worth a try, OP.
