well i think possibly a virus has compromised my laptop.

In idle mode all four cores range from 50 - 70 degrees

If i run something like spybot search and destroy OR youtube then cpu temps jump up to 87 - 94 degrees. Sometimes up to 98....its freaky it goes from 78 - 87 - 98 then back to 78 again all within seconds

I'm running spybot right now....but im annoyed my antivirus Avira hasnt picked anything up  (considering it does updates ALL the time)

I also opened laptop and cleaned the main fan and blew some air to get rid of some dust)

But i reckon its a virus or something.....whats my next step u reckon?

How old is the laptop and what is the CPU usage when it get hot?

If you are concerned about a virus you could run Malwarebytes Anti Malware which imo has good detection rates. However, I doubt a virus is the most likely reason for the heat.

laptop is relatively newish Advent 7555GX cpu quadcore Q9000 4gig windows vista 32bit ati mobility HD4850 MSI GT725 chassis

usually around 30% when fans go pretty loud (when spybot was running)

i ran Spybot search and destroy it found nothing. trying Malwarebytes now

btw the GPU temp has just sat at 60 degrees stable as anything

hrmm i guess a Malwarebytes scan doesnt task the system as much as Spybot because cpu temps are now more stable at 65 degrees

I can't see it being a virus if the loads are low when the temperatures are high, other things which comes to mind are:

Power saving features disabled, you can run cpu-z and check if the frequency and voltages change when its under load and when its not.
If cpu-z does not show anything then try process explorer (download it) and see if interrupts or DPCs are high when the cpu is idle, if they are then its usually either a driver issue (wireless driver updates cause this quite often for me) or a hardware failure.

Press that Resource Monitor button and you can see exactly what's taking up your CPU. Can't remember exactly what options the Vista version had, but if you order by "Avg CPU" if it's there, something should stand out. You can then tick it and see what it's accessing (the handles bit below) or search online to see if it's a known process name.

Of course it could just be that your vents are full of gunk so the heat can't get out!

ok roger i will dl both cpuz and process explorer and get back to you

Uhmm curiously enough now that you mention wireless driver update issue.....coz uhh the wifi on my laptop has been borked for a few months (using ethernet)....its kinda weird but the wifi would act very unstably....when it scanned for wifi points and i refreshed it it would pick up different wifi locations....sometimes it would take me a few times refreshing it for it to even detect my own router.......anyywayyyy long story short thats why im using ethernet cable now :) (yes i tried updating the driver - didnt fix it)

You ordered it by threads instead of average CPU :p. Click average CPU and it will reorder everything correctly so we can see what's hogging the CPU up.

As for temps, since it's a laptop, temperature tolerance is usually higher than their desktop counterpart. Might be best to open it up and see if you can dust out the CPU cooler, there's usually a carpet of dust hiding between the fins and fan which is usually not visible without taking it apart.

well if the interrupts/dpcs in process explorer are higher than ~5% then try disabling the wireless driver in the device manager and see if it reduces the interrupts/dpcs.

hehe i saw that after i posted :D

in the pic ok svhost is 10 but it would average around 4 or 3 for mbam

Also i have already opened up laptop and cleaned the fan :) You're right about the temps on laptops having higher tolerance because ive played a high intensive game (e.g. heroes and generals) when i quit the game temps have been around 99 even 100 and my latop safety shutdown did not kick in....hrmmm

If you just leave it alone, is it fine?

I'd imagine it's overheating from dust. What laptop do you have?

Take it apart, clean all the dust from the airways, clean up the CPU and reapply some new heat paste.

Also, put 64bit Windows 7 on there at least if not Windows 8. Will be so much faster and nicer to use than Vista 32bit!

Malwarebytes didnt pick up anything. I will take the back off the laptop and take some photos so you can see.

i cant help but think that the fact my wifi doesnt work on the laptop maybe has something to do with it?

oh also is this program dodgy? >>>> YrJie new games <<< i just noticed that its loaded as a IE add-on. i tried to remove it but the option to uninstall is greyed out...hrmm ok...so i tried resetting IE9 (this should have worked as its supposed to revert you back to defaults) but that didnt work either.

Ohh maybe i should mention as well....my laptop Lid is a bit fragile...you know when you move the lid to open the laptop...well my lid a bit messed up....kinda broken a little bit :D:eek: still works but that couldnt have anything to do with cpu temps. I will post pics of that as well

ive got a few IE windows open and cpu temps 50-56. gpu stays at 59-60

dont have any money for Win7 unfortunately

how do i check that? :D

Go into BIOS, but it depends on what laptop you have. During the POST screen (when you turn on your laptop and see the manufacturer logo) you need to either press Del, F2, etc or whatever your laptop manufacturer has set it to.

Once you get into BIOS, find the page that shows you CPU temps, and leave it their for about 10 minutes. Then check the temps and see what it reports.

Well this just gets better and better. Unfortunately i was messing about with the screen (its loose) well anyway the screen doesnt work now. so i plug in a hdtv with a hdmi cable to my laptop.

now problem is my laptop resolution is max 1440x900. and the tv seems to be 1920 1080p res. which of course my laptop wont display. i almost thought i had it as i restarted pc and the hdtv displayed the pc but then started shifting to different res. 640x480 1024x768 etc.... then shifted to a higher res automatically...so it displayed desktop for about 1 minute then screen goes black and this is coz its trying to dispay at 1920 1080p...which my laptop cant display at arghhhhh... :(

are there any computer repairs shops near you ?

If so you should think about taking it to someone who knows what they are doing
