Firstly I posted this outside of the VM thread for a reason, so it does not get buried within a page :p.

So I was pretty annoyed that I was getting throttled by nearly 95%, opposed to the 75% advertised on the 30mb package. This was not happening AFTER I exceeded my limit, it was happening after a mere 1gb.

So I went onto the forums, rather than calling the script monkeys. Mainly just to get an opinion

I get a reply back 3 days later, from a "Forum Moderator" saying:

"Hi Gibbo3771,

I think that we need to move you to the Docsis 3 network so I have sent you a Superhub which will allow this.

The Superhub should arrive within 5-7 Working Days.
Kind Regards,"

Right, firstly I don't really know what the Docsis 3 network is nor do I care, my internet speeds "were" completely fine before this guy posted the reply, note this part:

"I think that we need to move you"

I never asked to be moved, I have no idea if I have been but now my internet is reaching blistering speeds of 15kb/s download speeds, in fact I am using my phone wifi spot at the moment because it can actually load a webpage, my ping on speedtest.net is flying way over 1600+ to every server, even the one based in Edinburgh.

Also, he sent me a Superhub? I could have been posting from a friends computer, a cafe wifi or anything. How the hell does he know that it is the right address, I could be using any ones VM connection.

Surely enough, the SuperHub comes through the door today, my name and **** all over it. Another thing, I had to go through hell and back, spend hours on the phone to try and get a free router from them, never got it, if being moved to this network is going to make my £100 Cisco router useless...god help them.

Is anyone experiencing similar problems, this Docsis network familiar to anyone and should it seriously be that easy to just send me a router through the door, without request or even passing out any information?

Have you always been on the 30Mb package? If their moving you over to the Docsis 3 network it sounds like you may of been on the 10 or 20 Mb package. 10 and 20Mb were on Docsis 2, I believe. If you have always been on 30Mb, you will have been on Docsis 3 from the start.

They would have known your address by you presumably having to use your Virgin email address to register on the forum. The email address would be tied in to your account which would have these details.

The Superhub will need to be activated if you haven't already done so. 150 if you have a Virgin phone line or ring the number that comes with it. Takes around 30 mins for it to do its thing. After that stick it in modem mode (192.168.100.1 to access the GUI) and plug your router in to the lan port closest to the coax connector. After all that, go into the GUI and then click router status and post your downstream and upstream levels to see if there within spec. If there out, then that would be causing you problems. All though it could also be congestion. Start a thinkbroadband quality monitor, this would show if there is any congestion. Having said that, the 2nd line people on the forum should have checked those out.

My email address is not linked to my VM account.

In was orignally on the 20mb package, was more than enough and was getting close to 20mb, within 10%. So never seen the need to give them more money.

The superhub is not active, don't have time to call them atm because I a have better things to do. 10 minutes I spent before leaving today, managed to get the old modem to work again, giving me a meh but a connection at least.

So I gotta spend 30 minutes on the phone, listening to a script monkey that can't speak english...great.

I currently use THIS ROUTER, how would I see the the up/down stream information? Manual and box is well gone by now lol.

When I sorted my superhub I spoke to a geordie from newcastle who could speak english.
It didn't hurt. It didn't make me cry and it DID solve my issues.

I now get 105mb on my upto 100mb

You must have linked your account somehow or how the hell would they know where to send the hub

lol I am as stumped as you are...seriously, I am not even the account holder and I signed up with the forum the same day...zero links.

I will get in contact with them when I am home, see if I can get it sorted.

EDIT: No option to see up/down stream in router status, or any where. You probably guessed, I am a noob at this :(

That would be because the up/downstream stats are not in the router, they are accessed through the modem. Type 192.168.100.1 into the address bar of any browser. If it asks for login details its going to be either root and root in both boxes or admin and changeme.

If you don't want to swap out the modem then that's fine. The superhub will give you access to 30Mb though and the Docsis 3 part of the network which is technically better and should give you a better connection. The superhub is also perfectly fine in modem mode its just not apparently very good in router mode (haven't tried it in router mode).

When I activated the superhub I was sent a couple of weeks ago, the activation was automated and took about 5-10mins, then waiting 30 mins for it do what it needed to do.

Could you post your downstream SNR as well (seems to be cut off). Your downstream power level is fine, the upstream power level is a smidge low but I wouldn't of thought it would cause the problems your describing.

Everything looks ok with that. I would suggest setting up a Broadband Quality Monitor over on thinkbroadband. You'll need to register before you can though. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping Leave it running for at least a day although preferably all the time. This will help to show if your suffering from congestion. I would first swap to the Superhub though, if it doesn't help then you can then go back and tell the peeps on the VM forum and see what they suggest.

I recently moved form my very old Motorola Surfboard modem (which was the most reliable bit of kit I've received from Telewest/VM ever :D) to the new SuperHubs with a modem only option. This effectively moved me from 20mb to 60mb while at the same time reducing my monthly cost by about £3-£4. The switchover was quick as long as you did it during their support hours.

I would check with VM and see if you can get further speeds for the current price you pay as 20mb is very old and no longer offered as a package.

are you really sure about that because VM is saying im in a High utilisation area, if that's so then why does my TBB graph look good~ and yet get very poor speed at peak times?

Re how they knew where to send the superhub.

I'm guessing they checked the OP's IP from his post(s), which I suspect they'll have a tool to let them do certain tasks automatically such as book engineers and send out modems.

As has been suggested it's worth seeing if you can get onto a newer speed, as the 20mb is (from memory) no longer available to new users and cost more than the newer speeds.

That I don't know. From what I have read if you do have congestion then the graph would be showing high average and maximum latency. My own graph is not too dissimilar to yours and yet I get full speeds all the time.

That sounds about right. They can perform remote diagnostics on a modem using the IP that made the forum posts, and arrange engineers, so the engineers on the forum do have the ability to lookup account information based on IP.

If you posted from a non VM IP then obviously they wouldn't be able to do anything and would require further information from you, or if you was posting from someone elses connection who is a VM customer, well they would have needed a new modem in your situation anyway :P

Being moved over to DOCSIS 3 is a good thing, the superhub while having poor Wi-Fi can still be run in a modem-only mode allowing you to use your "£100 cisco router".

Well I did get the SuperHub setup, I am now apparently on the 30mb package, however virgin think it is funny to still be charging me the price that I signed up with 5 years ago. Bloody robbers.

Also being moved over has not done much, despite going from 20mb to 30mb I still only get 8mbit download and 1mbit upload, with extreme 95% throttling and horrible ping problems during peak times.

If the service in your area is that bad why don't you just leave?

Because when it comes to these kind of things, trying to change an ignorant females mind is like getting a serious answer out of Robert Downy Jr.

I have been moaning at her for years but she does not give a crap about the internet, as long as her TV works.

At random intervals throughout the year, the internet would die for hours/days and she wouldn't even care.

She is so stubborn it is unreal, she is currently paying £115 a month (with XL TV, Phone Line and L boradband), which is around £25 more than she should be.

On the VM website, £95 gets you XL TV w/movie channels and x2 TiVo boxes + Fibre. She is also convinced that we require the land line which is another £15, VM have it in her head that you need it for the internet when you don't.

So I am pretty much stuck with it.
