Badger, Badger, Badger

  • 3,215 cattle were slaughtered across the UK in January, equivalent to an increase of 24.2% on January 2012
  • Despite the introduction of a badger vaccination programme in Wales last year, the TB epidemic has worsened considerably.
  • The number of cattle compulsorily slaughtered in Wales was 819 in January, compared with 419 for the same period in 2012 - an increase of 95.4%.
  • More than 38,000 cattle have been compulsorily slaughtered because of TB in Britain in 2012, including more than 28,000 in England alone.
  • From January 2008 to January 2013, the total number of cattle culled owing to TB was 186,664.

All cattle have to be tested for TB before they can be moved. High risk areas have annual testing as well.

You don't really believe that do you?
I mean take foot and mouth the farmers got it in 2001 then again in 2007 so the farmers never checked.

I bet the farmers get more cash off the gov\eu if they have to put the cow down then if they sell it.

Just shows how much you know doesn't it.

They could use vaccination and have a greater emphasis on farm bio-security.
Wonder how many cows are tested before they are sold and moved to another farm?

Is that their job though? I dont mean that in a 'why should they have to do it' sense, but a 'can they do it' sense. Are farmers the right people to hunt down a ton of badgers and vaccinate them?

each cattle headed for the food chain has to have a certificate of where it came from and what treatments it has had, this then goes to the butcher/supplier.

at the end of the day the amount of revenue and food that cattle provide to the economy, the government/farmers will protect them and culling is just one way of doing it.

I know for a fact there was two outbreaks of foot and mouth in the UK so again no checks by farmers.

Their land their job if it's not their land then the owner of that land should do it not the tax payer.
And don't forget cats\dogs\people\cattle ect can carry the disease when do you want to cull them?

Does that go for the horse meat found in burgers as well?

Did you miss the part of my post that you directly quoted where i said i didnt support a cull?

I came across this article which is not directly related to the badger cull, but I think that clearing the countryside of natural wildlife could help with these 'farmers' plans for Mega Farms and Mega Bucks...

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/campaigners-warn-against-rise-of-the-megafarms-could-massive-pig-fish-and-dairy-units-harm-the-environment-8612471.html

"Opponents claim such farms will create enormous animal welfare problems where disease could spread quickly and the environment will struggle to cope with the slurry."

Find something else to spout your nonsense about. We don't get a good price for cattle that are culled because of tb.

People like you make me sick. Farmers are trying to make a living. Just like you do, so you can keep a roof over your head and feed yourself.

Ok so as you're a beef farmer can you tell me the avg price you would get at market
and what you would get if a cow had to be put down because of TB?
Also how much in subsidies do you get off us tax payers? just to help you

"In 2008 United Kingdom received €3,755 Million in EU farm subsidies or approximately €12,517 per farm"

What does that have to do with a badger cull?

I'm not a beef farmer. I farm dairy cattle.. I just work on the beef farm. You very rarely get less from the market that you would from the government. It isn't just about the money, that particular cow could be your best in the herd etc. It isn't in your interests to sell that animal. It's priceless.

We get £8k a year in single farm payments. It helps with a poor milk price and poor year etc. We don't abuse it. Others make all the money they can from it.

Everything, farmers are saying they are losing loads of money because of the baggers which is a load of bs
the EU want's to bring in measures to ensure that farmers are actively farming their land.
Also I have never met a poor farmer. If it was me I would stop all the subsidies and get the people in jail to farm the land.
