Stuck on Black screen after new PSU

Hey guys, I'm having a lot of trouble with this problem, and though I searched everywhere for an answer, I still can't find one.

Recently my XFX 750w PSU died (was faulty I believe), and so I had to replace it. I have replaced it with a Corsair 750w PSU, and it worked fine without my MSI 6950 in (working off on-board graphics). However, when I placed the GPU back in, it doesn't fully load...when starting up, it gets past the windows logo, they stops at a black screen (where the mouse would usually appear, then the desktop).

I wen't into safemode and completely removed the AMD drivers, and then it works (it boots as usual, all be it with a lower resolution). So the issue seems to be between the PSU and the drivers. I have tried both the newest AMD drivers and the drivers given on the MSI disk that came with the card, but still no change. Does anyone know what I could do to fix this?

Here are my specs:

  • Asus P8Z77-V LX Socket 1155 VGA DVI HDMI 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
  • Intel Core i5 3570K OC to 4.4GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
  • Corsair Vengeance LP Performance Memory modules 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2133MHz CL9 Blue
  • MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
  • Corsair 750W PSU
  • Windows 7 64bit

I would guess at some stage, a crash has corrupted some important file/s and this is the reason it is working but not quite. You could try a windows repair or try a non destructive install.

Sometimes, with a fast internet, a fresh windows install can save a lot of work and a headache.

I'm not sure if that would do much though, as I tried the same process of installing and uninstalling drivers on a different hard drive that was a backup of my stuff from quite a long time ago, and it still doesn't start when a driver is installed...

Perhaps flick the GPU to it's other BIOS, if it has one. It's possible it was damaged by the previous PSU letting go though

have you fully cleared the cmos since the psu blew or died?

chances are its corrupted the cmos when the psu died

pop out the motherboard battery for 10 minutes and then replace and bootup, make a note of all bios/oc settings beforehand as it will reset them to default

Could you please explain how I do that?

See if your 6950 has a switchable BIOS, have a look by the CF tongues

Flick it from the position it's in to the other, while the power is off. Worth a go, long shot but nothing to lose

His machine boots in safe mode, so I assumed it to be a problem initialising the GPU when Windows loads the driver. Worth trying a CMOS clear too though

The bios switch had no effect.

Before I remove the battery, could you please tell me if there are any risks associated, other than that ill lose my overclocking settings?

Also, do you have any other ideas of ways to fix it?

you might need a motherboard bios update if your not already using the latest

tested with onboard graphics? and take pics of each bios page/setting so you won't lose them before you finally clear the cmos
