I guess this is done to reduce cloning? so I did it on an ad for my car at ph.

Thing is I am getting a few requests just for the reg so they can 'get an insurance quote'

If they were looking for a car to clone couldn't they just email asking that anyway? Should I send them the reg?

I would send it out, they may want to do a HPI check which would be expected from a serious buyer and as said an insurance quote. Your number plate is seen many times a day anyway.

Just go with your gut on who you send it to, if it looks like a copy paste reply asking for details without any reference to you or your car just don't reply but I think you are hurting a chance of a sale without sending it to anyone.

The first thing I do when looking at cars is put the reg in to get an insurance quote. I find it quite annoying when the reg is covered up or hidden by the angle of the car, if I can't get an insurance quote then I'm not interested in the car.

If your car was exotic then i would think about hiding the plate as obviously an exotic car it more likely to be a target of being cloned but as for the common or garden stuff i drive, Ive got a black mk4 Golf in the car park, about the most common car on earth, no one is going to care about its reg, dozens of cars have driven past it this morning already. As for the BMW, its on my driveway, dozens of cars will drive past that today, the reg is on display all the time, its hardly likely to be a target.

I do LOL when there is an ad for a mk1 Focus or something equally common and theyve blanked out the plates. Thats got to be on par with wallys on Ebay not wanting to tell you the reserve on an auction

You don't need the reg to get an insurance quote.

Just leave the sodding reg on the photos.

If someone wanted to clone the plate of a run of the mill car, they'd go stand on a main road for 10 minutes and write a page-load down.

Here you go, go nuts:

Isn't this more about not getting caught-out by their own insurance?

To Insurer: No, there's no modifications to the car.
PH advert: Lowered suspension, after market exhaust... etc

It probably doesn't make much difference when you're older and insurance isn't as expensive but being 18 the difference in insurance between two seemingly identical cars can be several hundred pounds. Using the make/model selection on insurance websites doesn't give me an accurate quote so I need the actual reg number.

Most will perform an HPI check and perhaps an insurance quote before considering purchasing. Thus, the plate number will be required.

As paradigm said, anyone looking to clone a plate will just look outside for 10 minutes.

thx Ill send it then.

The car is a monaro so not very common and if someone had nicked one I thought they might go to ph to get a reg to clone.

I'd have thought the opposite tbh. That the chances of someone cloning a run of the mill car plate is higher as there are more of them around to steal and then hide its identity with the cloned plate.

If the plate on something more exotic was cloned, they'd have a hard time finding something to put it on.

I'd say the internet was a good resource for info on victims. Not only do they post there registration enabling locating them but there usage on forums like this enables said Criminal to know the persons working hours, work location. This not only tells the criminal when the victims property is likely to be empty but also tells them where the car is located whether that be in a works car park at a train station or at home over night. Profiling somebody via the web is quite easy these days.
Those with nowt like me have nothing to worry about apart from Gay stalkers like PM (:D) but those with expensive assets on show should be bit careful at least especially if they have wives & children in said home .

Just my 45 pence worth.

This - it's a PITA, especially when they don't put the trim level in the ad as well (you'd be surprised at the difference between e.g. an otherwise identical Focus LX and Focus Ghia)

Does't it stem from reg plates being blanked on the back of transporters and people NOT knowing why so have assumed its for cloning reasons and moved it on a bit

Agreed, I would have thought it would be the run of the mill cars getting cloned as well.

I must admit, having the VRN does make looking up insurance details quicker and easier when buying a car. For some reason, as someone else has said, the difference between two seemingly-similar cars can be rather high.

just adding to the noise, I dislike it when on adverts the reg is hidden and usually just ignore the car unless it really stands out as a real potential. just makes insurance quoting so much easier. *Inserts Reg*...oh so you want a quote on this car with these fittings and estimated this value... here you go :D again, just so much easier than trying to fiddle through all the options being worried ya speccing the wrong thing :)

as for cloning..... wouldn't they have to put the reg on an identical car? (might be me being stupid here) if they go through a traffic cam/speeding/what ever.... surely the police do a slight check that the car matches the description given by the DVLA related to said reg? not really sure what else cloning would be used for?
