So what's this all about? Anyone seen these signs in their area at all? Started to see them on my commute accross some parts of Surrey. I have seen programs on Discovery or some such channel where in America they have these "bait cars" which tend to be unlocked cars just parked up with the keys in them. They are wired up with cameras and tracking equipment and the police tend to be waiting around the corner to catch the person attempting to steal it.

I take it we have to put signs up in the UK to "warn" thieves of such cars incase they spend their poor lives locked up after taking one? Why do we have to do this? Surely it writes off any chances of catching people doing it if we advertise the areas the cars are in? Seems silly.

Putting signs up is a lot cheaper and generally less hassle than *actually* setting up trap cars and still acts as a deterrent.

Right up until people realise that the signs are meaningless, just like all the speed camera signs in places with no speed cameras and everything goes back to how it was before.

just like speed camera signs :p and how often do you see speed cameras? I hardly see any even though the roads are plastered with the signs. as stated... it's a trap ;) and most likely a deterrent and no actual cars are set up.... on the off chance they impound a car and can actually be bothered to set up a sting the signs are all there xD

"CARS TO STEAL IN THIS AREA......BUT DON'T STEAL THEM AS STEALING IS WRONG".... that's what I read that sign as xD

Theoretically, the possibility that the car they is about to steal is a trap car may put the thief off trying. After all, would it be better to have no signs, and 10 normal cars are stolen and one thief is unlucky and tries to steal a trap car, or 2-3 normal cars are stolen because the thieves don't want to take the risk?

what was that tv show they used to have on ch.5 (I believe) where they would stitch up criminals/opportunists?

I remember one where there was a VW beatle sting car set up, 2 mugs get into the car and proceed to try and hotwire/steal it... but instead the car just locks them inside.... starts making all kinds of siren/horn noises and then the car starts to shake and fall off.... like full on wheels fall off the sides xD need more stuff like this!!!! Still want a car alarm that locks the person inside and drops a flashbang on the bar-stewards lap xD

on a side note that program was hilarious. another sketch was they would send out invitations/congratulations to people who have failed to show up for court/parole/whatever to dodge the law... and they got invited because they "Won" a prize or to appear on tv show... they show up at said venue and it's all kitted out with tv cameras (obviously) and razzed up to look genuine... quick interview with the "lucky" person about them being all hyped and excited... walk through the curtains and there's like 2/3 coppers there who put them in cuffs and read them their rights xD HAHAHAHHA!!!!

The same way that a university pretty much eliminated bike thefts by putting a picture of a set of eyes over the bike racks, subliminal messaging does work.

the signs are up every day and night, that would imply there is a trap car in operation 24/7, that would mean a back up unit is sitting round the corner 24/7 watching the trap car for potential thieves. i doubt that a lot, so i assume it's merely a deterrent! ;p

What if Good Guy Greg comes along, takes the keys out, locks the car, and hands the keys in to the police?

I imagine if a do-gooder as seen the signs then he would leave it as it is as not to "interfere" with police business :p

could be a funny situation as said do-gooder goes to car sees keys, opens car, takes keys and walks off to hand in the keys... only to be intercepted by the police suspecting he's nabbed the keys to come back for it later :p

Do they do this so the authorities cant be accused of entrapment?

As maybe by plastering signs everywhere it removes the chance of the criminal claiming this as a defence?
