Please help me fix my TV

Hi,

I know there are some pretty smart people on here and I'm fairly sure my TV is fixable, so I'm going to do a DIY job on it and would really appreciate some help.

The TV is a LG 50PK350 50" plasma. I've had it around 2.5 years from new. When I turn it on, there is no picture but the sound comes on. If I keep turning it on an off (often for up to 20 minutes of doing this), eventually the picture will come on and it will work until it is put on standby or turned off. I think actually that it may be the lamp not always turning on, I don't know if I can see a picture when it's not working but very feint, or if I am imagining it (it's that dark if it is there).

I would think it will cost a fortune to send it back to LG, and it won't be under warranty so i'm going to give it a go myself. I'll post up pictures along the way.

Anyone know where to start? I'll take off the back, take some pictures of it and look for anything that looks blatantly wrong. I'll be back soon with some pictures, but anyone with experience would be really appreciated!

Could be dodgy capacitors on the power supply board, usually you can hear them hissing when you turn on the tv.

Hi, thanks for the tips. I first tried Rob Turbo's suggestion, and I couldn't see any image when I shined a torch on it (Actually the light from my phones camera). I looked for a while and couldn't see anything.

I then looked for capacitors which looked like there were blown (thanks troops), but I couldn't see any or hear a hissing.

However, when I then turned it on with the back open, I could hear a "tick tick tick tick tick" kind of sound. It's not the switching on sound which is more of a "ker-click" kind of sound, but it is a continuous, fairly fast ticking. I put my ear as close as I would want to the back of a turned on TV, and spent some time searching for where it is coming from. I am fairly sure (I asked the gf too and she confirms), that it is coming from the area I have circled in red in the image below. I have no clue what these are, I'll start searching now but perhaps someone already knows of a fault it could be.

The image is below, and I really appreciate your help! Thanks!! If you need a larger version (I resized this for the forum), then it can be found here:

Looks like it needs either a new PSU: EAX61392501/7
Or a repair kit which comes with 6 parts, which are all teeeny tiny and need soldering :(.

I just can't find that PSU in stock anywhere!

Sent you a trust message, so not to fall foul of forum rules. Basically this guy is taking one of these kits and assembling it on your board you (which you post to him) for £47

It won't be the backlight, plasma doesn't have one.

I learn something new every day :). Thanks!

Thanks! I saw that this morning and had a look. It looks like it will be good. I also in the end found someone with the same (but broken screen) TV in the same city as me. I'm going to first try to ask him to sell me the part as it saves me posting it etc, but if not then I'll certainly go for that repair service.

Thank you again for all your help!
