Hello!

Going to visit Prague, Vienna and Budapest in the summer, and I'm wanting a decent camera to capture some of the stunning buildings and scenery I will see.

At my current disposal I have an LG Nexus 4 and an iPad 3!!

I originally thought about getting a second hand DSLR, but then I plan on packing lightly with having to travel a lot on trains/buses during the holiday. So I'm looking for something which is relatively compact, but still offers good enough pictures to make justice of the things I will get to see on my trip.

Budget is <£200! The less the better...

I'd say something like a Canon Powershot SX260 HS, does HD video, GPS tagging and won't load you down. Make sure you get a couple of spare batteries if you plan on travelling a lot. If you don't want the bulk of a DSLR there's little point recommending a bridge camera so might as well go with a decent compact.

I just picked up a Fuji X10 for £200 and I love it

Its not the smallest camera but fits in baggy shorts, deffo not jeans, I bought it after my friend said the X100 was the best travel camera hes owned (and he travels a lot!) I just didnt have the budget for the x100

the main + for me was having a viewfinder cos most LCDs suck in the summer sun

Cheers, the Powershot SX260 looks good and I can pick one up for £168

Is it worth the extra over the Powershot SX230? Which I could get for £99...

260 had more zoom gps and more wide angle
Depends if these features are of use to you

Personally I would go for 260 but depends what you want from them

I'm not overly fussed about the GPS feature. Zoom and wide angle are nice features I suppose.

My main requirement is picture quality, I'll mainly be taking photos of buildings, bridges, animals and general scenery.

EDIT: just had another look and it seems I can't get the 230 for £99, not many places actually stock it anymore.

Should I stick with Canon?

I know that some updates with Panasonic will break compatibility with third party batteries but it doesn't seem to be an issue with this camera, I suspect you'll be happy with any of them. I'd go for the newer Canon for the better low light performance and GPS tagging because that would be useful for me. You can also load CHDK on an SD card and shoot RAW on Canons, with some caveats - http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/SX260

Thanks Janesy,

So looking at that tool the main differences between the 230 and 260 is zoom and GPS?

Night shots will be quite important actually, as I'd like to get some nice lighting of the cities I will be visiting. Does the low light performance of the 260 justify the extra here?

If u are doing lots of building photography, churches etc you are going to want all the width possible so you can get everything in frame, you can always walk back to make it fit.

It has a one yr warranty
Same size sensor but more zoom etc so depends what u want from a camera.

Cool, didn't realise it came with a warranty!

I want the best I can get for my money, willing to go a little bigger in size now. Will still have to be able to fit into a small bag. So this rules out DSLR + Lens.

What about these 2? They are more my kind of budget spending :p

I've had both the HX9 and HX10 both of which are very very good, HX20 just builds on them spec wise. The video is very good from Sony and it has some clever features like night shot and panoramic and silly things like 3D. Battery life is pretty good and can charge from USB.
