New ASUS GTX670 making a buzz

I just recieved a new ASUS GTX670 4GB card, installed it and went to OC it.

Now a problem occurs.. When i run benchmarks to test the stability, i get a buzzing sound from the GPU that is noticeable even over fan noise etc.

I started to test what it could be, so i slowed the fans down while running the benchmark, and the buzz was still there. So it's not the fans, what else could it be? It only occurs when the GPU usage goes up.

I contacted ASUS earlier today, and got a fast reply that i should not worry about the sound, as long it didn't cause any damage or made the card defect. I have to disagree with them, as i will return if this sound persist.

Anyone got a clue what it could be?

it is coil whine... what benchmark are you running?

run something like Heaven for as many hours as you can and it might settle down, if not, RMA time
as you've only just got it, email the retailer now to let them know you have a problem and then you are covered under DSR if you need to return the card and you won't have to contact the manufacturer and wait weeks for a replacement, you can just return it to the retailer and (hopefully) get a quicker turnaround

I thought coil whine came from the fans? I ran Heaven Benchmark for 3 hours.. It seems to get louder the more power i allow the card to use. When it's at default clocks/power, its not as loud as when i set it to 122% power.

I already contacted the retailer, and they agreed to RMA it and send a new once they get mine, but i'm just afraid they will say the same as ASUS

coil whine comes from the coils in the capacitors
run it for 24 hours straight, with it set at 122%

they sometimes need burning in so to speak and calm down with use, or sometimes they just stay like it

if you've only just got the card you can return it for ANY reason under DSR, coil whine being a perfectly valid reason

Ah okay. Well, i already packed it and installed my old GPU, and dont really have time to install it and let it run, so will see what happens tomorrow when the retailer gets back to me.

Thanks for the quick answer, now i can be calm again :)

sorry, just noticed you aren't in the UK, so no idea what your local laws allow for

They're the same, i have 14 days to return it for no apparent reason, so it should be fine, but if they don't think it's faulty, i would have to buy a new, and since this one was on sale, i probably wouldn't bother :)

Return it and then wait for the new cards at the end of the month. they should either lower existing prices or offer better performance for similar money. hopefully :)

Originally I would, but the retailer here in Denmark was closing a storage and had a huge price drop on leftovers. This card was one of them, so it was truely a bargain.

If it only coil whines in benchmarks and not in games (does it? you didnt say ?) then I wouldnt have bothered returning it.

it doesn't work like that... game x might not tax the GPU right now, but in a few weeks time when he starts playing a new game that does and it sparks right back up, then where would he be? out of the 14 days time period with Asus saying it's not an RMA-able problem

by the by anyway as he's already returned it
