I mean would this work as I eventually want to join the force, but I would also like to own a dog, but it would be unfair to leave the dog on its own for too long any helpful suggestions ?

Thanks

I'm always against it. I'm an engineer and my partner is a teacher. We'd both love one but the thought of leaving it alone at home all day just seems cruel to me.

I bought a beagle as I work from home 99.999% of the time. However on days when I'm out on the road we can tell he's been cooped up all day. Not that he can get into any trouble as he's in a crate.
He also has a dog walker that comes in everyday which helps.

Unless you would have someone to look after it when you're not there, 10+ hour shifts are going to be very unfair on any dog you own.

I think a lot of people with 9-5 jobs have dilemmas about it. If you do longer shifts then I'd steer clear. Wait till you retire or reduce your hours.

If you have reliable neighbours it can help. The guy who lives upstairs loves dogs and has mine up with him all day whilst I work. I chuck him a few quid a week for it.

Unless you could pay for a local dog walker to come round, or have family/friends to come round on a regular basis. Then I think it'd be unfair.

Not fair on a dog really to constantly be alone for so long each day.

I work from home full time , my dog is used to having someone around all day - and isn't happy when I need to go away for a few days and she's alone from 9AM - 6PM

Not fair on the dog to be a policeman. All the other dogs will call him names and steal his tennis ball.

7 hours a day isn't an unreasonable time to leave your dog, everyone has to work.
Not much longer though.
Plus i imagine he gets a much better life being left 7 hours at home, then loved than he would being left in a shelter somewere.
