EA is getting rid of online passes! Only to make MORE money.

“Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format,” Reseburg explained. “We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward. We’re still committed to creating content and services that enhance the game experience well beyond the day you first start playing”

Quite surprised about this as we all know EA likes their monies.
Hopefully this will be the end of this online pass business for everybody.

Going into the next gen they need to make people want to buy their games brand new. Things like giving a code for FREE dlc with new copies.

Isn't that basically what the online pass is? ;)

Its about time, there are rumours Next gen Xbox wont be able to play Pre-owned games... If this is truth then that might be why because Online passes will be irrelavant.

This won't happen now Sony have confirmed they won't be doing this with the PS4.

I'd like to think so, i dont buy many if any pre-owned games but i know people who do and it will make some of there market go over to Playstation. Many people rent games too from Lovefilm etc so thats another thing which would get turned over.

Hang on, is an online pass the code you get which you have to type in to play games online? Or do they mean the season pass which gives you access to all the DLC?

I thought it was a good idea myself. If the game was pirated you still got a small portion of revenue from them if they played online and something if resold. If you didn't play online they it didn't cost you anything more.

Plus lot's of the games had a trial period for free, the ones I tried. Not that it matters they will follow a minimal content at launch and DLC through a season pass idea to claw back money.

I feel this is E.A treating all gamers like idiots... AGAIN, and trying to be "smart".

Yes, they are "dropping" the online pass system, HOWEVER, it is now well known that both the PS4 and the next XBox have DRM "built in" should a publisher/developer require it. E.A will never utilise such systems, would they?

So, are E.A doing the "right thing" or is this what they thought to be a clever PR tactic of filling the room with smoke, then when it clears, everyone realises they have stole the family silver?

Shouldn't have been introduced in the first place. The cynic in me thinks they are just going to ramp up the micro-transactions in their games now :(

Slight thread hyjack but wondering if someone can help me with something related.

I've just bought Tiger Woods 14 and when the game starts up it just says:

ACCOUNT ERROR
Unable to retrieve account information. Please try again

This seems to be preventing me from accessing any of the online stuff in the game.

I'm trying to find somewhere to put in the online pass that came in the game box. But the description of where to enter this code doesn't seem to exist.

Where do you enter the online pass? In-game, on Xbox Live or on the EA website? According to the insert it says I enter it on the "Online Pass Screen" where it says "Redeem code for online pass" but I can't see this anywhere in the game menus.

I am connected to Xbox live and have a gold account so don't think its hardware related.

Most likely. The good thing is that you don't have to buy any of those.

You will if they make them like ios games or FB games where you have to grind for a year to unlock the next level unless you pay :D

That's what I think's coming. As I've said before I'm am constantly amazed how much people spend on these FB games. I saw someone ask for a diamond pack on one game I play, the highest pack is approx $500 for 6000 diamonds and there was a thread where people wanted a bigger pack as that wasn't enough :D

A 7 day speed up costs about 400 diamonds (£40) and people pay it on mass!

Sadly this is the way gaming is going to go and they will rinse the **** out of it until the start to kill gaming.

I truely wish I knew how to start a business and make these crappy FB games.

Agreed.

I found that prices for second hand games generally took into account a small fraction of the cost of online play built in.

For me it made sense. Those who bought the game when ti came out, or a few weeks afterwards were uneffected. It just made sense.

i am sure ea has made agreement with both console makers to block future games altogether from being played on more then one account anyway. they will kill the second hand market entirely when new consoles come out

Well doesnt the announcement of Xbox One just colour how nice EA are to us by removing online passes ;). Not like they knew there would be another way to monetise second hand sales now was it...

ps3ud0
