Being a police officer and owning a dog

I've always wanted a Border Collie but I'm out of the house for around 12 hours every day in the week and live on my own. I've just accepted the fact I can't have a dog until I either get someone to move in with me who doesn't work or have retired! :(

I ended up with a cat instead!
 
Have a lab/collie cross, she is alone from 8 - 5.30 nominally during the week and with us for most of the weekend.

She's healthy and happy, and the vet is constantly remarking on the excellent condition she is in for her age. Bella is an older dog though (11 now), so I imagine it would be less fair on a younger dog.

If someone can afford to feed a rescue dog, do it. Nothing else matters, that tiny bit of attention instantly makes that dogs life far better than it was in kennels. Besides, they sleep all day anyway.

Yes but we're more than likely talking about people who would rather "buy new" than re-home a sheltered dog. So what we're actually talking about, is someone potentially buying a dog which could potentially end up adding an additional name to the list of sheltered dogs.... Not sure what fairyland you think people live in, but I certainly didn't want to re-home a sheltered dog, I wanted a puppy of my choosing.

For what it's worth OP, my missus is a copper and it definitely wouldn't work without a second person; especially when they're young and need feeding 3 times a day.

I was referring to people mincing over leaving a dog 6, 7, 8 hours a day like it was a ticking bomb or something.
You do know that bitches come into rescues with a litter all the time? :confused:

I don't have a lot of time for people who would only buy from a breeder, sorry.
 
I prefer dogs from shelters they often have more character and the puppy stage is just annoying as hell to deal with, they over excited and **** and poo all over the place.

If i had a back garden i would get a dog even though i work all day, i would just make up for it on the weekends and evening by giving it attention, better than being stuck in a shelter or being put down. But in winter you have to get a shed for it or let it in the kitchen with a dog flap.

Siberians like German Shepherds are chewers, they are notorious for it, if you leave them with the run of the house after a few months they will demolish it. They will be fine when they are older and have all their adult teeth, got over adolescence etc.

but you dont know what problems they have if they are a rescue. ours is fine and great with kids but my old neighbour got one that was used doe badger bating and it kills anything it gets its hands on. proper nasty animal.
 
Well you have to be careful which one you pick and speak to shelter people about their personality. If you take it home and it starts being aggressive, take it back. I had dog growing up that was from a shelter and was a complete rut, when we first got it, it appeared aggressive, especially around his food. But we had it for 12 years and it was a great dog.
 
I'm out all day and I don't see my dog in-between setting off for work and coming home, saying that he isn't inside, he is outside on a fair amount of land to play around on, with shelter if he wants to rest, then when I get back I take him on a walk:)

I do agree it is cruel to leave a dog inside all day, but outside I don't see a problem

Ask if you can train to be a dog handler:)
 
Our Dog is left from around 8.15 to 3.45 each weekday and is fine.

Sadly At times I have left him until 5. He is good as gold I am not saying its good for him, but it is what it is. We love him and treat him as well as our lifestyles can

Hes a staffie and all he ever does is sleep on my pillow :( lol even if I am In that's what he does anyway.

They chew when their bored. E.G when they are left all day...
 
get two dogs... then less of an issue with them being alone?

or

hire a dog walker... my parents both work and have a dog... though a dog walker comes each lunchtime during the week. Dog is only alone for 4 hours or so at a time.
