Hi there,

I'm interested in perhaps becoming a mobile app developer. I just wanted to find out what qualifications I need!

I have a worthless business degree, do I just need to do some online courses?

Google brings up a wide range of opinions, so someone here might be able to help :).

Thanks.

Depends if you want to develop apps for iOS from what I have heard you need to learn C language or Objective C. Im not sure about Androids though.

If you think you can get a job as a software developer after doing a few online courses you are mistaken. It helps but you need some proper experience. Like anything you need to work hard at it.

You don't need any qualifications to develop mobile apps you just need to learn to code.

You may require qualifications to be employed by others as a developer...that depends on the people/organisation... Then again experience developing your own apps probably wouldn't hurt here.

Also why mobile specifically? If you've got a business degree already and don't fancy another 3-4 years studying computer science/software engineering then maybe look at project management or non- technical business analyst roles. Prob more of these available for people with your profile in big software firms though rather than lots of the startups involved in mobile development.

I always see adverts for a training company called Treehouse on Youtube. Apparently secretaries quit their jobs to become web designers and people pay their mortgagees with mobile apps. I'd check it out.

I'm doing an IT degree at the moment (final year) and as mentioned Java appears to be the main language for Android. I'd probably start with a core "teach yourself Java" bool, read and learn it and then move onto various "become an Android developer" books.

I'm a mobile app developer. Everyone I work with has a degree in either computer science, maths or physics. That's not to say that they're the only degrees that get people jobs in the industry but that's where most people come from.

What's very, very important is being able to demonstrate that you're a good mobile app developer. That means writing your own apps in your spare time, getting them published on the relavent app store and then showing them off to people. We never hire anyone who can't show us examples of their work. If you can demonstrate that you're capable of making great apps then there's plenty of companies that will ignore you lack of a relevant degree. Only stuffy large companies will care.

Most people I know who've learnt iOS or Android are self-taught. There's a tonne of quality information available on the Internet. You can get everything you need to start writing apps for free.

If you've never written code before then it's going to take you a while to pick things up. You might want to take a course where you can ask questions if you're completely new. It really depends on how much time and money you've got to invest in it.

I nearly spat coffee all over my phone, bravo sir.
