Los Angeles, must see attractions

Hire a car and drive somewhere else. LA is a hole with few redeeming features but is surrounded by some of the most awesome places in use USA. See them instead.

This to be honest.

Venice beach is worth a visit.

Until you see a big pile of rags and then realise it's a homeless person on the beach!

Go to the Hollywood Walk of Fame if you wanted be completely underwhelmed and accosted by pee soaked wino's in filthy Homer Simpsons costumes!

I think I saw the best LA has to offered by...

a) Land LAX at 5pmish. Collect rental car. Go to bed.
b) Wake up at 4am, jeg lagged. Go to Hollywood (Which is a complete dump) and Beverely Hills and check out Mullholland Drive.
c) Leave. Be in San Diego for lunch

:p

Unless you gamble Vegas can be done in 2 days... Walk the strip and look at the casinos one day (and do the rides on stratosphere) then go shooting and do a show the next night, leave the next morning for somewhere nice the next morning! Vegas is just like a glorified Blackpool IMO. I spent 10-12 days travelling through the SE US a few years ago and the worst bits were LA (proper) and LV...

2 days longer than LA then :p

Plenty to see and do, but make sure you get yourself a car as its all dotted around, majority of which is outside 'downtown'. Everybody always refers to LA as a dump, granted there are nicer places around but its still worthy of look around over a few days.

Driving up into the hills in Beverly Hills (mainly residential) is pretty cool, incredible views and some amazing houses. Plenty of places to pull over with your camera also. Rodeo drive is also worth a look (one of if not one of the most expensive streets in the world to shop).

Walk of fame is worth doing, photo opportunities of the Chinese theatre and the disney theatre whilst you're there. The walk of fame itself is a bit underwhelming though, never seen so many 'adult' shops on one street before :p

Venice beach is really nice, so much activity on the beach front (loads of weirdo's but entertaining nonetheless), and a pretty 'cool' place to be. The beach itself is really nice though. Better than Malibu beach imo though, which is still worth a trip out.

Griffith Park and the observatory are also worth a look.

Vegas isn't a dump at all, I had expectations of a glorified Blackpool prior to going but I was pleasantly surprised.

That's exactly what I thought of Vegas. I loved it, but with the tacky shops, homeless people, beggers, constant getting hassled by prostitute promoters and the fact it is really very dirty, it's not by any standard a nice city.

I loved LA. Santa Monica was cool. Lots of great bars/restaurants too. The main attractions Hollywood, Walk of Fame, LA Zoo, etc weren't that great.

Thing that made the Zoo worth while for us is that this flew overhead.
