macbook pro retina

Wait for the Haswell CPU/GPU upgrades for the 13". Will give better performance as the HD4000 is having some issues keeping up with the screen resolution.

15" model is fine though.

i did this video xirokx of my retina 15" MBP doing a few things. You can see how fast it is...

cheers

what gfx card do you have inside it? how much RAM does the gpu have?

I nearly purchased one with ATI 6750 1gb RAM today, still in negotiating with seller..

Tell me, does the ATI 6557 / 6750 1gb perform better then the Nvidia 650GT 1gb in the macbooks?

Thanks so much for your help

p.s. if i bought a second hand mbp without warranty, could I purchase a warranty from apple? would they be OK with it?

650m is a lot faster, and I think the graphics switching is much better with NV cards which is 1 reason I like them more.

It is the Nvidia 650m 1Gb in mine with the 2.7GHz Ivy Bridge.

When will the next mb come out? How can you play windows pc games or are all of the latest pc games work in a mac?

I'd say you need to wait at least until the WWDC to see what Apple are going to release.

I on the other hand have no problem playing some games on my GT650m card.

I recently got Neverwinter and Dota 2 running through wine, I've also exclusively played Path of Exile on the macbook. There's also plenty games in my Steam library that are Mac compatible so I can't say I have any issues.

For windows games on mac have a look here
http://portingteam.com/frontpage

I read earlier (as speculation) that it is possible that the only hardware upgrades are Ivy to Haswell.

2 cores is absolutely fine for graphics. Also I you won't have an enjoyable time playing on a mac, maybe low settings at 40fps? Awful. Why not just spend the £1500 on building an absolute beast gaming pc, triple monitors, ultra. Macs are highly overpriced and there are a lot of common misconseptions such as 'Macs dont get virus's' - rubbish.

Install windows in bootcamp and enjoy the best of both worlds. Steam is also available for OSX now but you will find you will generally get better FPS by running in windows

As an "absolute beast gaming pc, triple monitors etc" won't fit in your bag?

Missing the point of the OP's question much?

You're gonna have to fork out a stupid amount regardless of what you plan to do with a MacBook. It pains me that i'm gonna buy one off the next line-up but i need one specifically.

Cool thanks. sounds like a plan.

I am now using a macbook pro retina that was provided by work and so far i am really impressed. it is very good for developing code. The keyboard could be better though as my own dell xps keyboard feels better.

the screen is blooming amazing though on this laptop and the touchpad is actually usable!

both those laptops have subpar specs compared to a macbook. Both also have shocking screen to work with. Not to mention they run windows which is not good for proper proffesional work such as coding and media work.

There is a reason why media workers use a mac and there is a dam right good reason why google developers use a mac.

I know right? Even a 17" MBP (which is 1920x1200) doesn't look as good compared to the rMBP, it's not a change you'd notice at first but when you switch back the difference is huge.

Just noticed you mention about playing BF3. I have the 2012 MBP with a 650M 512mb card in there. That can manage it on Medium fine with the bells and whistles turned off, occasional slowdown when things get hectic but certainly not a slide show and is smooth the majority of the time.

I am quite limited by the VRAM in there. Can't comment on COD as don't own it. Other games I play

CSS: 250-300fps but ancient game
CSGO: ~100fps, maxed out from memory
L4D2: Maxed out, perfectly smooth and likely 100+ fps

I do run an overclock of 1050mhz core / 1100mhz Memory.

Have a look here for a decent amount of game benchmarks on the card

Any chance you could expand on why Windows is bad for development? Never heard that before.

(Apologies to get away from the discussion, genuinely never heard that Windows is not good for professional coding.)
