I'm 5ft 6 - 196lbs.

How many cals a day do I need to eat to lose 1/2lbs per week?

I plan on starting a dumbbell routine for working out at home to aid in the weight loss but should I get my diet fully in order first?

Thanks

Put some ****ing work in yourself, jesus.

Yeah, the calorie aspect of it is fine, I understand that now. I'm after advice on which dumbbell routine I should use. You don't need to be so rude just because you're sitting behind a monitor.

Well the reason he is rude is because it appears you aren't doing very much yourself when everything is already there.

The stickies are a good read if you haven't read them already and I would be surprised if you don't find what you need in them

The short of it is, you'll need to be on a calorie deficit to lose weight, exercise will also help but joining the gym with be better than dumbbells at home due to the extra equipment available at the gym

If you believe in all the energy expenditure type stuff... This is a rough guide:

3500 calories in a pound of fat

3500/(7) amount of calories less than your working metabolic rate (google this) to lose one pound a week

Increase to 7000 numerator for 2 pounds etc...

You don't need to exercise or eat healthily, all you need to do is eat less than you need. There is about 2 reasons people exercise and eat healthily, one is because it means you can eat more, two is because it means you won't die as quickly.

3) Greater health, energy vitality in day to day life

4) Better performance at everything

5) Increased handsomeness

... etc.

OP, there is no such thing as a DB routine for fat loss. There are many DB routines, some of which have different emphases, but the only thing that is really "for fat loss" is diet manipulation.
