Hi there, currently have my reference Powercolor 7970 under water and have opportunity of buying a 2nd 7970 to add in to the loop for a reasonable price. However, according to the cooling configurater site the version is a boost edition card, and although it has a reference pcb which will allow me to put same block on - will xfire'ing a boost with a non boost provide any problems?

Can a boost edition be stopped from 'boosting' and just set a static clock to match that of non boost card?

Any help much appreciated, cheers.
 
Well from what I'm aware the cards match the lowest clocks but I could be wrong I would over clock it to the same clocks or flash over a boost bios to the non boost card if you can either way I think the boost function is pretty redundant if you got the cards to a decent oc anyways like a 1000/1475 out something or higher if you feel like it seen stable clocks n the 2250 range on a decent pcb
 
Well I can clock the current card to 1185/ 1600 with raising the voltage to 1212 mV using Trixx (stock 1174mV). Temps don't go above 42-43 deg. Could clock it over 1200 on the core I'm sure, but haven't really felt need to as yet.

I would probably settle for having both cards clocked at 1100(ish)/ 1500(ish) if possible. Just wondering if the 'boost' would cause any issues with frame rates, cause micro-stutter etc?

Also wondering which card would be best to use as primary card?

Sorry meant 1250 not 2250 that would be insane clock lol!

I'm not sure I would just flash the boost card with a non boost bios and get a good oc on both cards and then wouldn't matter what was your primary card....

What water blocks you using and loop config
 
Current block is EK CSQ with backplate (which is just for aesthetics)

Loop currently goes: bay res/ pump> cpu> ext rad (120.3)> gpu> res

Would be adding in another rad inside case (120.2) and proposed loop would go:

Res> rad> cpu> ext. rad> gpu's > res

Altho may have to change that up depending on tube routing etc.
 
Officially it would void it, but can replace stock cooler and hope nothing is said. Chance tou take I suppose.

I believe there are 1 or 2 companies where it doesn't actually void the warranty.
 
Sorry to derail a bit but I have a board that will do x8 x8 PCI-E, how much performance would I lose compared to a x16 x16 board? I've just bought a 7970 off here and i'm thinking off crossfire but would I have to upgrade my mobo?
 
To stop boost is easy, just set a clock on afterburner or any other tool that you are using to overclock.

the cards can work with different clock speeds, but most people like to keep the same, on water you can run both cards at 1100/1500 or more without any problems.
