Everyone up in arms for a week. Footballer get caught with a hooker or photographed with a 'mysterious brunet' in St Tropez. All forgotten. Next election everyone goes and do their 'civic duty' by voting for MPs/parties that wouldn't take the time to spit on you.

Can you really put a price on the work they do? I mean they run the COUNTRY, taking care of everybody's lives. They should be paid closer to £250k if you ask me. Plus London is very expensive remember.

"A survey released by the watchdog in January found politicians on average believed they should be paid £86,000 rather than £66,000, with some demanding more than £100,000"

What on earth is the point in a survey like that? "Do you think you should earn more money?".....everyone answers "Yes"

You really have to despair sometimes.

I don't see the problem.

MP's have a difficult job with a lot of pressure and responsibility.

Well then why don't they actually do something with the responsibility.

'We are all in this together'. My arse.

If their responsibility is to make the country worse off every year, then yes they are doing a fantastic job and deserve thousands more.

I do think it's rather difficult to justify a pay rise for MPs at the moment. The image it sends really does alienate them for their electorate.

1) They can have the pay, as long as they give up the allowances. After all, they got the allowances to get around not getting pay rises. If they are being paid (say) £100k then they can afford a -ing hotel room now and again. And to pay the staff they employ. Those that don't employ their own family or mistresses anyway.

2) Performance-related rises only. They love to advocate these for the rest of the public sector, but always seem to miss themselves off the list.

Amen.

As rightly mentioned above, the kind of people who want power are exactly the kind of people who shouldn't have it.

I say we thrust control of our nation into the hands of a group of scientists with minds like Stephen Hawking (as I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want it).

Some may say but they are not qualified to run the nation - then I'd kindly ask what qualifications our current people in charge have.

At least they would value evidence for setting policy, screw democracy - the public are idiots.
