Hi all,

Looking at a new CPU cooler. Thinking of the 2 above but would like some personal recommendations :)

Thanks to all.

The mount doom is the current best performing cooler on Z77 as Stulid points out in his reveiw. The only issue with it is its size if you want to use tall RAM.

Stulid didn't test the D14 or TC14PE or Silver Arrow for that matter.

No going to argue with an 8-pack recommendation though, as he knows what he's talking about (and he has huge arms)

I use the D14 myself and i could not be happier with it.

It was a breeze to install (even though my case is pretty small) and the performance is faultless.

4.5 Ghz on my 2500k and keeps it under 60C.. Can't ask any more.

The fans provided with it are great, much better than my old SP120's..

You won't regret getting a D14.

That being said i've not tried any of the others. :)

Glad you popped up :)

I've checked the size of the K2 mate as I'm thinking of getting the TJ08-E and worried it won't fit. It's 4mm higher than the D14!

Yeah, considering the CPU cooler height of the TJ08-E is 165mm (max) a 163mm high cooler (the K2) is pushing it. Though it probably would fit.

The is a little gap between my D14 and the side panel, the main thing to worry about though is interference with the PCI-E slot. The Silver Arrow and Phanteks come too close to the GPU (when one is install) to install without a bit of modding..

I can say the D14 fits, though i have ghetto modded the fan clips to stop them shorting the GPU (i put electrical tape on the outer edges, so if the GPU does touch it, it wont short :))

The H100I I have already reviewed, but I ran it again to match the same tests as the air coolers.

The NH-D14 could be added this week if I stop being lazy.

Yes it's very mind numbingly boring.

Still if you get to keep them at least you get something for it. IF you get to keep them (can't imagine they'd want them back would they?), unless you buy them for your reviews?

But with regards to the OPs question. I've not used either of those, but I'm currently running the Silver Arrow with TY-143 fans. They can get loud, but I like having that extra bit in the tank, just in case. Keeps my i7 3930k (with a small overclock) pretty cooling even while running Prime. As mentioned though there can be an issue of width as well as height if you need the top PCI-E slot. I imagine they're all fairly similar in that regard though. Doubt you'll be disappointed with any of the big tower cooler suggested here though.

They are much of a muchness as far as I can tell from reviews. If you obsess about fractions of a degree, you will go round and round the different reviews and not get a consistent answer. You will also have to obsess about TIM and try them with different fans to get the best out of them. In my mind, when you are at a small amount of a degree, you can consider them "the same" as you have to account for measurement accuracies and differences between TIM and different installs using the same TIM by the same person having slightly different efficiencies (due to different TIM thicknesses/pressure applied etc...).

Me? I've just bought (i.e. it is being delivered today) a D14-2011 and mounting bracket for 1155 - I was after the PWM fans that come with the 2011 and OC have a pretty good price at the moment: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-015-NC&groupid=701&catid=2330

I think the Mount Doom for me is about 1c-2c better. Very similar though. The Mount Doon is certainly more bulky though so its much depending on what your case can accomodate.

You still don't have the Silver Arrow SB-E Stulid?

As far as I can tell the big air coolers are all extremely similar in performance though, so you can really choose any of them. I went with a PH-TC141PE in black because it looks the best IMO. That said, these things take up a ton of room in your case and make working in a mid tower a nightmare.

Closed loop is more expensive, but more convenient and now offer superior cooling performance.

It is rather bulky, in my board one of the fan clips is almost touching the back of my audio card as i have it mounted above my top gpu.
