Treadmills, who has one?

The other half is looking at getting a treadmill since it is perpetually rainy here and she is afraid of attackers in the woods, and I know there are a fair few health nuts on here, so before she blows £400 on a treadmill I thought I'd see if anyone has any experience or advice to offer.

I do see the irony in asking health equipment advice from a forum of computer enthusiasts, but I'm not a believer in stereotypes!

Thanks in advance!

I have an Horizon T5000 Elite. It's great, well built, well spec'd and I use it every day. I would be cautious of cheap ones, and £400 is cheap for a treadmill.

Yeah I know. She's about to leave her job so we cant spend too much, hence why we're looking at the low end. What sort of things should I be wary of in cheap machines?

Poor, low powered motors, for continuous running/jogging look at around 2.5HP or higher. Make sure the running surface doesn't slip or stretch easily and is long enough and wide enough for your stride and gait. Make sure it is sturdy enough and that the weight limitations are within spec...if a treadmill doesn't specify a user weight limit, I would stear clear of it.

I would look to buy a decent one second hand rather than a cheaper one new if you can.

This is my one:

I have one, its about 13 years old, was approx £1200 when first purchased and still going strong.

I wouldn't pay £400 for some flimsy **** if you're serious.

Right, I'll look on gumtree etc and see if there's anything decent going. Any brands to avoid or to seek out?

I have the NordicTrack C2500 which I bought reconditioned.

I'd personally save your money and go running outside, always find treadmills stupidly boring and no real flow of fresh air makes them even more miserable.

Much more interesting and physically harder than a treadmill, running in the rain is fun anyway! Why not start running with her if she doesn't want to run outside alone?

Perhaps some of us have done countless marathons/half marathons and are now suffering the joint damage because of pounding the roads for decades and now want to run on a cushioned surface.
Perhaps some of us already cycle to and from work and just want to get home and run in comfort while watching a video on the TV.
Some of us may want to run all year round and not look outside the door and not go because of the weather.
Some of us may not feel safe running around our local streets and can't be bothered to get in a car to drive to somewhere better.

Here you go OP and their after sales is brilliant - http://www.restylefitness.co.uk/find/Treadmills

Good grief, technology now.

The Nordic Track T14.0 treadmill features iFit Live powered by Googlemaps - the only wireless connection between home fitness equipment and the internet. You can now customize your own workout program, experience outdoor trails in the comfort of your living room or have event specific training routines downloaded to your treadmill wirelessly. (Module Not Included)

So basically go on Google Maps, put in your preferred run and it will mimic the route :D
I must admit that I have the iFit on mine but I just used the preset programmes running against 4 other computer runners on a screen.
I now just put it on 16kph on a 4% incline and run for 5k.
