Girl hits cyclist then jokes about it on Twitter.

No it still makes zero sense. What danger is there by just holding station where you were in the traffic when you come to a queue? you will still have to go past any further obstacles with cars behind regardless (although you will definitely have cars behind you if you go to the front of the queue??). By going to the front, you then have everyone who was in front of you before the red light then having to overtake you again.

The main reason for the cyclist box things is so that cyclists gong straight on don't get hit by cars turning left that are oblivious to them. At a junction I will always go to the front & pretty much in the middle if the light is red. Bit different if it's green though.
At a pedestrian crossing it's a different ball game and I would probably stay at the same sort of place. If there is a very long queue for a roundabout I would filter and merge in at some point before getting to the roundabout (although I am thinking of a specific mini roundabout on my route as I don't encounter such things very often)

You know what winds me up most about cyclists ( and 99% seem to do it). When you come to a red light, instead of just waiting in line at the point they were in, they ride to the front......then when the lights go green, everyone is stuck behind them again and everyone has to overtake them again!! Saw it happen once again this morning on my way to work.

The arrogance and stupidity of doing this is beyond belief.

The problem is a cyclist is generally to the left. So can't hold in line as when they stop ignorant drivers pass them forcing them out of the queue

Surely going to the front unnecessarily endangers a cyclist?

It means more traffic having to come past you, because some of them will have already gone past you once before. More vehicles having to overtake you means more chance of a mishap, no?

Depends on the junction really. As noted previously, a lot of city centre junctions tend to have filter lanes on the inside specifically for bikes and a box at the front so they are clearly visible to other traffic when the lights change. Is it really that big a deal if it means cars have to go slightly slower for 10 seconds when traffic starts moving again?

Personally, unless there is a v obvious filter lane as described above and I'm sure I have plenty of time to get to the front before the lights change, I'd much rather just hold my position in the road like other traffic. 90% of the time that's what i do.

I think it's generally safer when i'm on the bike to stick to the road and behave as any other vehicle would - i show the same respect to other road users whether I'm driving or cycling. Cycle paths are generally badly maintained, covered in glass, and appear and disappear at random. The constant transition from a cycle path to the road is far more dangerous than just sticking to the road imo.

You think it is about over taking; I am telling you gain from the mindset of a regular road commuter for now over 5 years in London, who follows the road rules, it is for my safety to maintain a line and ample distance from the kerb / parked cars / whatever.

The only issue I have ever had from anyone doing this, tends to be angry, fat men who seem to hate cyclists.

As a cyclist who is currently learning to drive I have to say I'm very conscious now of exactly how poor the visibility is in a car compared to being on a bike. Those blind spots are insane.

There's dumbasses on both side of the debate, and believe me, decent, responsible cyclists hate the ninja red light abusing lunatic cyclists as much as drivers do. That being said, I'd rather 100 lunatic cyclists cross my path and annoy me than one inattentive driver that leaves me in hospital.

It depends. Safety courses teach us that most drivers drive with tunnel vision so i'd rather be directly in front where the driver can see me than off to the side.

Roads are for Cars

Cycle Lanes are for Cyclists

Paths are for Pedestrians

If the road doesn't have a cycle lane TOUGH! Moan to your local council. It's borderline stupidity/suicide riding a bike on a road these days. In the event of an accident who is going to come off worst?

She caused it.

She did not cause a witch hunt, morons on the Internet caused this. We have all made mistakes in our past, should we all have out lives wrecked and potential careers wrecked because some **** heads on the Internet decide to become the moral police of the world.

If your answer to that is yes you are one sick little puppy.

Personally I wouldn't want someone with that mindset, nor the idiocy to post about it on Twitter working for me. How they found out is irrelevant, she did it to herself.

It is up to the police to inform the employer if its applicable not for the childish Internet police to decide. She acted like a fool and deserves her punishment from the police if it comes but for people to wreck her life off the neck of it is insane.

None of the employers business what she does outside work, if what she does breaks the law and this effects her ability to perform her job then fine. U til that point it's not up to you, me or any fool on the net to try and sabotage her life.

Honesty the idiocy and niavite of people is astounding at times. If you want spelled out in ten foot high letters in crayon which I'm assuming might be your level, how would you feel if someone tried to destroy your life over an indiscretion. An indiscretion, I might add, in which nothing has been fully proven yet.

How is this arrogant? Was it safe to pass the car, if so, then what's the problem? How dare another road user be an inconvenience  I don't know about the roads you are on, but unless the car/lorry is a crap driver I don't hold up the traffic coming away from lights as I stick to the left. (traffic islands/parked cars/traffic etc might be more frequent in your area which might present greater problems passing?)

What i dont get about the guys that do this, and i also see it quite often, is how they lack common courtesy on the road. Everyone is politely waiting in line to go, yet they feel they should be able to go to the front of the queue? Why would they push in front just for the sake of 20 seconds? and also make it so the cars will have to overtake them again which is always a danger. Its not about being an inconvenience for me, its about being selfish and rude.

Its almost as bad as those absolute scumbag drivers who dont merge until right at the last few feet and they force themselves in at the front of the line.

Roads were NOT invented for cars

And who is likely to go to prison for trying to get somewhere a few seconds quicker.

Is it worth it.

I think some sort of mentality test should form part of the drivers test

The police wouldnt have even known about it if not for those witch hunting vigilantes though.  If she is guilty of what has been suggested, they got a very dangerous driver off the road(hopefully).

If people broadcast information on their crimes to the public domain, they cant expect any privacy whatsoever. That information is out there and if people feel it should be forwarded to the police or her employer than thats that. Dont like it? dont post details of your criminal actions on twitter.

also couldnt disagree more with it not being the business of her employers.

I can tell you as a driver for years, and a cyclist for the past three, that my experience of the road has saved my ass a few times. Learning to predict what other road users might do is key to this.

The problem is that it is easier to hate a cyclist than another driver. You just think the driver is a **** and get on with your day, but if it's a cyclist... "oh bloody cyclists" etc. "Birds of a feather, stick together", and that applies to driving as well. This debate will go around and around so many times it's ridiculous.

Surprised there haven't been more pictures of the lady driver. lol.

Yep

Yep

Roads are for Cars
Nope

Two of three isn't to bad. If you're so confident that your attitude is correct. If heaven forbid you hit someone while driving, why don't you quote your post to the court. See how well that goes down? Off course you won't do that will you? Becuase deep down inside, in the part of your brain with a degree of sense, you know your talking pish.

Is it really so hard for people to just respect each other on the road.

crash helmets should be law

Crash helmets that are still subject to a (reasoned) debate as to effectiveness? Even a lot of helmet advocates don't agree with legislation.

and police should prosecute people who drive on the pavements/run red lights or ride at night with no lights on. I see these examples time and time again in Bournemouth.

Well they do (both idiot car drivers and idiot cyclists are guilty), but there aren't that many police cars about to catch the act. I see more cars run red lights each morning than I do bikes (although that number is coming down as red light cameras are set up).

.

Barging a driver into a hedge, driving away from an RTC and posting about it on Twitter does not constitute a 'mistake'.

Why would her life be ruined. She deserves to be punished heavily for what she did. By the sounds of it, she avoided killing the cyclist by inches and then revelled in the fact she had hit him. That sort of mentality makes you a scumbag.

She might lose her job and she should lose her licence for a long time. A guy nearly lost his life and she couldn't care less. I don't have any sympathy for her.

I am far more interested in GD's apparent inabilty to remember anything. We have this same thread every week. Cyclists, why Scotland sucks, religion, and immigrants - these are weekly, even daily fodder, and we pretend that it's new or fresh or interesting or in any way not exactly the same thing we all said 7 days ago.

Does no one else think that this is odd?

nice hypocracy there. how about ending the weekly pathetic attention seeking topics that you write........

same regurgatated pish week in week out......hair, reddit, anime, justin timberlake, i would watch this movie (i see that one crept into this topic as well)
