Afghan interpreters win the right to come to the UK.

From The Times

The Government has also increased its financial offer to those who want to remain in Afghanistan, with the aim of limiting the numbers who will choose to come to Britain. Those who remain will be paid their salary for five years if they train or study, an increase from the initial suggestion of three years. Or they will continue receiving their salary for 18 months, in monthly instalments, up from 12 months.

These two choices will also be available to the 600 or so Afghans employed locally as cooks and security guards.

If all 1,200 Afghans opted to go to university or train as mechanics or IT engineers it would cost the taxpayer at least £36 million over five years. The figure is based on an average local salary of £500 a month. The final sum would be larger becasue the Government would also pay course fees and training costs.

If all 1,200 took the third option, and received their pay for a further 18 months after British Forces withdraw towards the end of 2014 it would cost £10.8 million. The offer is considerably more generous than the one discussed by the National Security Council (NSC) last month.

Aye, cos we have done SUCH a great job of leaving the country in such a safe, stable condition that all the locals who have worked for us will be in fear of their lives.
