When you go for a crossfire setup do you need to use cards from the same manufacturer ?

I am currently running an MSI 7950 OC rev2 and I can see that the HIS IceQ 7950 is on this week only

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-065-HS

can I pair that up with the MSI with no issues.

Also does anyone know if the HIS Ice Q card is a reference model as I will be watercooling it.

MSI and XFX at different stock clocks here on my rig (but overclocked to the same speed). Crossfire will work fine.

I dont think the IceQ is reference.

Its not AFAIK but I had 3 ICE-Q cards and sent them all back due to offensive buzzing noise issues. Thats just my view on them and plenty of peeps love them all the same

I am guessing you can OC the HIS card ? I am currently running the MSI at 1150 core so I would hope the HIS card can do the same ?

Does anyone know for certain if its reference card ? If it is reference would I be right in thinking it would be voltage unlocked by default also ?

Wildman you have one of these? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-203-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1673

I've just pre-ordered one. Can you tell us about the card, how it clocks, is it voltage unlocked etc and how far you can push it.

With the HIS card you will need HIS tool to overclock it outside of CCC limits i think. It can be a pain if you have to use two different overclocking apps for each gpu. Tommy knows about this i think hopefully he will see this and comment.

they will run at the same clock, so higher one will (probably) downclock

I saw a post on here the other day from the amd rep which said that crossfire will run at different clocks, ie they won't down clock to match but will run at their normal speeds despite being different clocks. Can't seem to find the post. This is probably how you can also crossfire the same family such as a 7970 with a 7950.

the card I have is the TF3 OC card v2 that was made on the reference 7970 PCB. It clcoks like a dream 1150 on stock volts. Once I get my cards under water I reckon it will be good for another 200 + on core with some extra volts.

If HIS cards need different tools then I will pass, I like to keep things simple :). Maybe I'll just go for broke and get the MSI OC Boost Edition which I know will certainly be reference board and will be good for the same clocks as my current card

Apparently if you use two different Tahiti cards for crossfire (7970+7950/7870XT) you need two xfire bridges. I learned something new today.

Haven't heard of one that can't do 1150MHz, the vram almost certainly won't stay very stable much above 1650MHz though.

I have two in CrossFire that hit 1200MHz+ and had another with a faulty fan that hit 1200MHz+ also.
