Hey, I need some advice on which graphics card you would reccomend. All that I need it to do is to play 1080p movies, no gaming required.

What would you suggest?

Ooh, very nice. i think my work computer is running the 6450, and £20 is what I was looking for.

Thanks ArchAndroid!!

Might get me one or two of these then.

The MSI one looks like the better choice, but I am a bit confised. The title says GDDR5, where as the spec says GDDR3. Hmmm...

Looking at the MSi website
, it states that it is in fact DDR3 rather than GDDR3 or GDDR5. This means that this card is still capable for video playback but it would perform worse in gaming situations as DDR3 is slower than the GDDR memory which is geared to graphics performance.

edit: The Asus one is DDR3 also. Apparently the difference between DDR3 and GDDR3 is quite small anyway. However, if you wanted one with GDDR3 memory, there is an XFX 5450 available for an extra fiver in the rainforest ;).

Good luck.

Yes, the HD5450 will handle 1080 and blu ray. I run the 1024Mb versions in my living room and bedroom htpc's.

I think the 5450 is terrible at full 1080p movies.

I haven't noticed any problems so far. One is running in a rig with an old AMD x2 4200, and the other with an intel G550.

It could be that the software player, or codecs that you were using have been the cause of the trouble. I use media player classic, which uses the GPU for the video acceleration, and highly recommend it.

any amd card from the 3000 series onwards will fully decode 2d bluray. 5450's are are a perfect choice if you dont need 3d playback. if you do, get a 6 series card or above :)

I'm wondering how good a quality 1080p you guys are running because my 5450 is really bad at any of the big rips.

They will play fine at first then you get to some fast action water scene and the 5450 just really struggles to keep up.

I thought any of my onboards graphics from the last 4 years gave me better video to be honest.

Maybe I had it set up wrong but I remember buying one for £20 a couple of year ago there must be better options out there.

they are perfectly capable of decoding video straight from the discs, never mind any rips. Like i said, any card from the 3000 series upwards can. what you get with more powerful cards is more flexibily in the processing and filtering you can use (upscaling low res content, noise reduction on HD sources etc). none of that is reaaaally needed to play blurays.

even then 3470 in my ageing VAIO laptop does just fine.

It could be the software you're using imginy? I had a 5470M that did 1080p fine with MPC + LAV Filters.

Yes could be I didn't know as much about pc's back then and I haven't used it for years it's just sat here gathering dust along with my 6790.

For me it didn't like high quality 1080p but yes could have been my fault.

my 5670 is fine with playback via DXVA - but if I use MadVR - it doesn't quite cope

well it almost does - but I have to drop Chroma Scaling to Bicubic instead of using Jinc

upscaling using MadVR looks far better than straight DXVA which I think for upscaling uses Bilinear for upscaling

my 5670 is the DDR5 Sapphire version, I've got it clocked to 910/1050 or something

I think if I upgrade it I will go Nvidia - I have a few issues with the ATI drivers, sometimes my video ssettings seem to reset (and hence things like noise reduction, dynamic contrast etc get re-enabled), and the colour space is a bit confusing, as you can set it in multiple places in the driver
