*** Official Nintendo Wii U thread ***

Although sales may well have been poor for EA, they released "FIFA 13" on the Wii U but in fact it was pretty much using the FIFA 12 mechanics, people clearly weren't going to buy it knowing that, so hardly surprising. Still reeks of EA spitting their dummy out to me.

I wonder if once the PS4 and new Xbox are on sale, that might actually make the Wii-U look a more attractive buy. I imagine that part of the Wii's success was down to the price compared to PS3 and Xbox 360. If it gets to point that a typical supermarket has the PS4 for ~£400? and a new Xbox for ~£300-350? and a Wii-U for £99-150, that might well steer some people towards the Wii-U. When faced with a similar line up a few years ago for PS3/360/Wii, how many people went off to source a PS2 instead of getting a Wii and I'm on about the general public. Parents in Supermarkets etc. At the moment, it's a bit unfair on the price front because it's next to 7 year old expensive consoles that are now cheap.

Just a thought

This EA developer doesn't seem too impressed:

Ouch! He posted more too apparently. I'm surprised someone as senior as him acted so unprofessional on a public platform like that. He comes across as incredibly bitter about it, like someone from nintendo took out his mother and didn't call her back :p

He has a point that its unconventional....but i really don't see why that's such a terrible thing? Innovation is needed in the industry, and some will be hits and some will be misses. Ultimately i think less developers are willing to take the risk simply on the basis of money. 10 years ago you could develop a game within a year with handful of people, and if it bombed it wasn't such a huge deal.

Now, the development teams are so big that its hard to justify pouring money into something that will ultimately end up in a loss. Its a bit worrying, as ultimately if this is true and the trends continue games will just become "safer" and "safer", as they know it will make money.

Back on topic, "walking dead" is a pretty strong statement, and quite ignorant considering how long they've been in the industry. The wii U will ultimately not be as successful as the wii, that much is obvious, but it will still pick up once the games are released.

I can't help but feel that nintendo should really just stop relying on third party publishers altogether. They ultimately relied on a strong 3rd party backing for the launch, which was actually quite strong, however no one buys nintendo consoles for the 3rd party titles. Their strengths lie in their exclusives, which have so far been few and far between. Perhaps a better strategy would be to simply expand, purchase more independent developers and begin creating new IPs. There's no reason why these new IPs couldn't be more "adult based" either, they can still retain their brand image of mario/zelda/kirby etc while providing different FPS/sports games.

What encouraging is that i guess they've already started this, they licensed zombi U and have been working closely with platinum games, but they really need more if they want to fully support a console from launch to finish.

Motion controls was innovative, the Gamepad not so much, it's just an extension of the DS dual screen idea and for the most part isn't actually used that well in most games.

Though to be fair Nintendo do need to stop trying to be so cheap all the time, I love their games, but they can't release a console that is on par with 7 year old hardware, better in some ways and worse in others and then expect 3rd party developers to embrace it when the next 2 consoles coming out are massively more powerful.

Game engines etc are going to be written for much more powerful machines with much more RAM, devs aren't going to waste their time trying to cut that back to fit the Wii U when sales for 3rd party games are horrendous.

Nintendo just seem to be stuck in the past constantly, their online strategy is laughable, every single digital based vendor uses a proper account based system Apple, Microsoft, Sony and Google all have content tied to an account that can be used on any device compatible with that content, Nintendo decide they have to be different, for what reason?

Though I suppose they wouldn't be able to sell people the same virtual console games over and over again if you bought the content once and owned it for the life of the account.

Some great points there:cool:

I think the gamepad is pretty innovative, albeit not as much as the motion controls. The things you can do with it are pretty impressive, and they have some great ideas for how to use it but unfortunately many of them haven't been shown yet.

Nintendoland is a great showcase of what the console can do, but unlike wii sports etc its very hard to communicate how it works and how fun it can be unless someone actually plays with you. As a result its very difficult to market, a TV commercial would just be confusing, whereas with the wii the message was very clear. Asymmetric gameplay, play without the tv are two great features on their own. However i really hope they integrate the gamepad very well with their first party titles.

I'm really looking forward to zelda in particular (surprise surprise :p), as the potential there for puzzle solving is huge. Using the gamepad as the lens of truth is an example that comes to mind, but im sure there are others that are better. Unfortunately this is a long way off, which is a real shame however the dev team was clearly busy with skyward sword. The flipside is that the new metroid will hopefully make use of these features too, albeit it wont be as much of a system shifter. E3 will really make or break the system, but tbh i genuinely think it will make it. It's just a shame its taken this long.

Slightly off topic, people keep mentioning that they should just become a software company, but that would really just kill them in the end. They have franchises that are coming on for over 20 years old, and still releasing games for them. What keeps them fresh is the new game play elements that are facilitated by innovative hardware. As soon as you take away that hardware, after 2 or so iterations the games just wont feel as fresh or have that "sparkle" anymore. With this in mind i can understand why they insist on hardware innovation, as ultimately its where their future lies if they want to keep using their IPs and keep the (internal) game developers excited about what new elements they can put in their games.

The majority of other 3rd party developers just don't have the same strategy. Instead you just see an IP have 2 or 3 iterations, and ultimately become stale, as there's nothing to keep the gameplay as fresh. However by this time a new IP is out, and so people are working on that etc and the cycle begins again. So nintendo are definitely on the right track for whats best for them, however its a shame that it just doesn't fit with whats going on in the rest of the industry.

I care about 3rd party support for 3 reasons:

1) More choice of games
2) Success of 3rd party = more games
3) If I have only 1 console that I can play 3rd party games on

However, points 1/2 aren't really that applicable to me at the minute. My Wii U is used every day. Sometimes that's for Wii games, but frequently it's for another go on Mario just on the pad etc. This is becoming quite a trend in our house, particularly for my son who loves playing off screen and I can watch what I like - or even play on my PS3.

Nintendo just messed up massively with their own lack of support for the console. Really bad. I don't care about online accounts, I don't care about 50hz games (that I grew up with anyway), I don't care about a shortage of titles as long as there's not such a long barren spell. Which, unfortunately, there is!

Christ think of the games they could have released. We got NSMBU.

I'm surprised I've got that many post to be honest :p

Anyways, in other Nintendo Related news they have confirmed that Smash Bros, Mario (3D) and Mario Kart will be discussed in the Nintendo Direct at E3 with other titles to be discussed also.

Yes we all knew this already but officially confirmed for the Direct Broadcast...which doesn't have a date yet...they really SHOULD get a date out there for it.

I'm jealous that in the US they're getting Best Buy Kiosks set up for e3 time in the stores so you can try the e3 demos :(

Due to this I would hope they would consider releasing them as downloadable demos too :D

Yeah it's really gimped LOL slight over reaction.

It may be only slightly gimped, but I think the point is they had the choice of giving Europe either the full quality US version or the gimped version they gave us 20 years ago, and both were just as easy to do, yet they decided to screw us for no reason...

Also, a date has been set for the pre-e3 nintendo direct, ive forgotten it, but its out there :p

Slightly unrelated, but i saw the legend of zelda symphony concert last night at the hammersmith apollo, and it was AMAZING. Unfortunately they've not released a mastered CD yet, but there are recordings on youtube. They did some really good ones, including majora's mask, link to the past, and ballad of the wind fish (!!)
