More like 20 years too late. I used to read those spy books as a teenager. One trick was to hollow out a book so that the pages still looked like normal on the outside but with an approx. 3"x3" hole cut inside. You could hide a cassette tape in there, and would also hold some nowaday phone models.

I said it once already, tablet....OP is referring to a tablet, as much as the iPad wasn't the first, but it was when it took off.

If we are saying hiding things, it's not 20 years, it was the invention of books, which is way older than 29 years.
