AMD for Intel - am I going to notice the difference?

Have been toying with the idea of upgrading my Asus 990FX Sabertooth + AMD FX-6300 combo with an Asus Z77 Sabertooth + i5 3570k.

I recently upgraded my mobo and am hesitant to go through all of that again. Plus the hassle of reinstalling everything. My question is what sort of real-life, in-game improvements am I going to see?

This is my current rig:
Asus 990FX Sabertooth
AMD FX-6300
2 x 7950 Crossfire
8GB RAM
1 x 60hz 1080p screen

Plus in the back of my mind I do wonder whether I'm perhaps better off sticking with AMD what with the next-gen of console games likely to be built around multi-core tech...

You will see massive minimum frame improvements and in same games max frame improvements.

I see you have xfire. I think a 3570k will defo help unlock more potential out of them.

If you're happy with the way games play as it is, I wouldn't bother. There is no telling what is coming next year or how the consoles moving to multi core will affect performance on pc games. The intel is faster but it's up to you to decide if that slight increase is worth the expense.

Do you game with the frame rate overlaid or do you just play?

Yeah, I have become a bit of Fraps whore I'm afraid!

I thought about that - it would certainly be easier - but I'm running my current FX-3600 at a 4.5ghz overclock so I'm convinced I'll get a noticeable day-to-day gaming gain.

I'd sit on my hands and seriously ignore that upgrade itch and wait for something more significant to come along. If you can't afford to go all the way on intel then I really wouldn't bother as the gains aren't going to be epic going from a 6300 to a 3570 and without looking at the numbers, I doubt it would even be noticeable.

If I were the OP I would see how far I could overclock the FX6300,since they have a fantastic motherboard, and see what happens next year with the new Intel and AMD releases.

I play all sorts mate, from triple-A stuff to indie.

Have pretty much decided that I will upgrade, by the way. Just toying between i5 3570k or i7 3770k. Oh and also between the ASRock Extreme 4, Extreme 6 or the the Asus Sabertooth.

You really should be waiting until Haswell is fully released in the next few weeks or so.

Even then I think you have upgradetitus and with that it is better to step back and wait a while anyway.

Have never subscribed to the "wait and see" school of thought - there's always something else around the corner. Think I'm going to go for an i7 3770k and ASRock Extreme 4 (or maybe 6).
