How to transfer without losing internet performance?

some thoughts
1) setup a second network on dedicated network cards force it to use the correct nick by using the iP addres. possible reduce the network traffic
2) could use a cross over cable direct connection and take the network out completely.
3) use a bandwidth limiter so as to not saturate the network, set it to something like 75mb upload on server, so your gaming has 25mb to play with.

might get some better advice from the networking and connectivity sub forum

Just get a small gigabit switch, plug everything into that and that should sort your issues our along with making your transfers faster.

That router you said you are using is fairly rubbish

Quality of service settings, unless your router is incapable of this. In which case throttle the transfer to something below wire speed.

QoS on the router won't help as it's the switching capacity that appears to be the issue as the WAN isn't being used in local transfers.

QoS will resolve this issue but you'd need to configure on the local machine (windows 7 and above have QoS built in) and you just need to use local group policy to configure it.
