Caved in and bought the SSD as I've been waiting for a higher capacity one to go on offer. One review said that the firmware had already been updated when bought (as the 0309 firmware seems quite old now) - could you please confirm this? If not, can I check the firmware easily in the BIOS somewhere?

I think you can check it quite easily with the firmware upgrading kit from Crucial.
 
It should be recent unless its a redicovered hoard from somewhere and the shipped firmware should be printed on the back sticker.
Crystaldiskinfo will display also, others too more than likely.
