It does seem daft - we are 1 race - the Human Race. We're all just subsets of this.
Religion has nothing to do with race in my opinion, but then again I'm not Jewish so I can't comment on why they would consider themselves a race.

If they control the university they can select who goes there. Look at hollywood, if jews own a studio they can decide who works there. If you want more X in hollywood then you should create your own studio and hire X. What you are calling for is reverse discrimination, you want the government to come in and force equality laws so that X is more represented than Y. I would rather allow private organizations to decide who they want to hire without these sorts of race based affirmative action policies distorting incentives and ultimately leading to problematic results.
You will most likely find that harvard selection process is based on other factors other than nationality anyway. Not everything has to be proportionate to population statistics or its racist.

Seriously though, sometimes jewish people class themselves as a race, many do not, but I wouldn't be surprised if for statistical reasons race and religion were questions asked on entry forms in american schools(I know race is here but I can't recall anything about religion but religion is still taken very seriously in the states compared to here).
It wouldn't take someone with ulterior motives long to go through the numbers and discount anyone who called themselves both white and of Jewish religion as "non white" because the person looking at the numbers don't considering Jewish people to be white.
As in, it doesn't have to be jewish people not considering themselves white, many non jewish people want to separate jewish people from themselves.
Religion is a joke, full stop, and race is a joke as well, I don't consider myself english though I was born here, I merely am, thats it. Everyones entitled to believe what the hell they want as long as they don't try and enforce their idea's on me. I don't randomly want English sports stars to do better than ones from other countries based on the part of the planet they were born. I'm fairly sure plenty of French athlete's will have been born closer to me than "English" athlete's born in the north of England.
The world would be a better place if they stopped insisting they were this that or the other, and ultimately different from other people, when there is absolutely no need to distinguish between any of these things.

It depends on the Jew, the answer to "are jews a race?" is basically "yes, and no" from a genetics point of view (subsets). There is a "jewish" gene pool.

I hate to be a drone BUT:
1) Incomplete statistics without their sources qualify and substantiate nowt
2) Statistics about population demographics from 1996 have very little to say about the same demographic in 2013.
(and I didn't have to go to Harvard to spot those two basic errors)
