OK folks :D

Nephew's pc has gone (as in the last words of the Red Baron) 'Kaput'
It works but refuses to load or install W7 - HD & install DVD is fine. Changed the Sata leads but still won’t install so I've come to the conclusion the board has a fault (ran memtest on the ram last night so that's OK)

So I need a replacement board, CPU & cooler. (I could use the current cooler, a gelid tranquillo Rev1 but I dunno where the other mounting kits for it are right now) I have preference for Asus or Gigabyte boards, not fussed about AMD/Intel.

He’ll use it for his homework, youtube & for some strange reason he likes to play some game called minecraft? (Never heard of it, but then again I don’t get out much :p) I want it as cheap as poss.

What’s being kept:
CM Elite 430 Case
Corsair VX450 PSU
HD4850 Graphics card
Samsung F3 500GB HD.
Pioneer Optical drive.

Need another W7 OEM disc as the current W7 disc is OEM too.
He’s getting the 4GB of 1333 DDR3 Ram that’s in my gaming rig right now, so I can move the 1600MHZ stuff into that & my everyday trinity rig can be treated to some high speed ram goodness, I need low profile stuff though that’s good as Corsairs & has a lifetime G/Tee so spec me some of that too. (A10-5700 & GA-F2A85XM-D3H)

I don’t really want to trawl the MM for a replacement 775 board TBH. It’ll be his b/day prezzy & the current rig was my old hand me down anyway.

TA muchly :D

Mine-What? I've never heard of it, but i already sounds like an over-rated pile of... :)

Anyway, for Him:

Im pretty sure it's quite low profile. :)

Ignore

P.S. If you are getting new RAM for a trinity build go for the fastest stuff you can afford, 2000MHz + would be better.

Trinity build for a budget would be a good shout as andy has said. It will play most games very well and Minecraft should run smooth as butter. For less than £200, it's value for money.

You may not need the extra copy of Windows.

Install the copy you have and activate it by phone. When you get through to a human tell them that the old motherboard is broken and you have replaced it. They should let you activate it.

That's not a bad idea. I can wait for Richland to be released & give him my A10-5700, then flog the old card. I'm certain he won't notice or give a monkeys. He plays his games on a 360 anyway. :)

Update on this.
I took the old rig to bits, assuming the old board was faulty I binned it & sold the rest on the auction site. Turned out the graphics card had a fault & not the rest of the PC.

I feel a bit stupid now & its now going to hit me right in the wallet :(
Still it gives me an excuse for a minor upgrade. :)

Right this is doing my head in with what to do.

I want to put my current A10-5700 in his rig but I cant decide on which richland CPU in order to replace it. Considering 95% of what I do on my everyday rig is web/office stuff, can I justify taking my everyday rig to bits just so I can do a minor upgrade?

The RAM choice is also doing my head in too. I want to put some quicker RAM in my everyday rig but it has to be low profile & most of the 1866 & hardly any of the 2133 stuff isnt. I'm aware how good the Samsung green RAM is but I know NOTHING about Ram settings or how to overclock RAM. I just want to pop the RAM in and it works at the speed I want it to.

Thoughts?

The thing is, I'm thinking of its resale value when it comes to upgrade (having said that the last 2 PC upgrades I've done the hand me downs have gone to my sister, then her old PC's that were previously mine go on the auction site, an E8400 that was mine only a couple of years ago went for a paltry £16.50 :( )

TBH I dont need a 6800K for overclocking, If I want to do that I have a Sandybridge rig for that purpose. The A10 5700 I'm more than happy with but I don't want to downgrade & my sister's eldest boy will end up getting a more powerful PC than mine for everyday use. The rig I have right now is whisper quiet & I fear the extra heat from the 6800K will make the fans spin more & make it louder.

I wouldn't worry too much about resale value if you are planning on holding onto the PC for any significant length of time, as it will always devalue to a point where you get just a small fraction of what it initial cost back.

Maybe spend the extra and get the kid an A10 5700 / A8 5500. It may cost more but will save you puling your rig to bits and will him an equal / less powerful PC than yours.

at idle power consumption will be the same
and in low system load the heat generated will be the same
If you do not need the extra power do not get it
But heat will not be a problem

Well this is what I eventually ended up getting.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-6700 3.70GHz (Socket FM2) APU Richland Quad Core Processor (AD6700OKHLBOX) £119.99
1 x Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £68.99
1 x GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL38GB1866C10DC) £59.99
Total : £248.96 (includes shipping : FREE).

I'm quite aware the 6800K is the same price on TWO but I can't be arsed to overclock it & I wanted some low profile 2133MHZ to go with it if I bought it, but I couldn't find any & I didn't want to buy any Samsung green Ram & mess around with is settings. Fit it & job done so to speak. :)

Final update folks.

I found that the A10-6700 runs a fair bit hotter than its predecessor (By about 10 degrees according to the bios on 2 motherboards, mine & on the sisters eldest boy's rebuilt rig) I didn't see that much difference (if any) in the speed TBH. I was hoping it wasn't going to be like that but the extra noise from the CPU & case fans convinced me enough to keep the trinity & give him the richland. His gain & my loss.
