Hi, I built a system an i7 system (920, 6GB RAM, GTX260) a few years ago and the motherboard has been dodgy for a while. I assume it's the motherboard anyway! If I turn the system off then I have to completely unplug it and wait a few hours before it'll come on again. Otherwise, everything gets power but the board doesn't even try posting (I can remove pretty much everything and it doesn't complain, it doesn't do much of anything..).

So, I'm back looking for a clearance X58 / 1366 board to magically appear on OCUK. Or I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and upgrade, which I can't really afford.. but I'd like to do :)

You might want to pop this query into the General Hardware section.

Have you tried borrowing a PSU from someone, to see if that is the cause?

That's the tricky part really, I don't know any 'enthusiasts'. One of the RAM slots doesn't work either, so I could do with replacing the board despite my turning on issues.

Have you tried the take-it-all-apart & put-it-back-together-again approach? Aging electronics can be very prone to dodgy connections in my experience; re-seating connections can work wonders.

I have a few times (this has been going on for a long time). The only thing that seems to work is waiting, so whatever is responsible for kicking off the boot process is not happy until it's had a rest. My money situation isn't actually too bad - if I can wait for a month or two I might grab a motherboard / CPU (i5) / RAM (8 or 16GB) / GPU (660TI) bundle and sell off my current CPU / GPU (and other stuff I might not need that I can determine is working fine). My GTX260 is a trooper, but I need to be able to run Arma 3 / DayZ (and boring GIS / work things) at full pelt :)

It may be worth the cost to take it into a local computer store for a test if you don't have the spares needed to hand.

It can be very expensive assuming one part is at fault without any actual testing.

I returned a GPU to OcUK to find them say it wasn't faulty, I then purchased and new motherboard and PSU to find out it was actually the GPU that was faulty.

That's a possibility too, though it would be a bit of a beast to move (Silverstone TJ09-BW, lovely case) - might have to enlist someone with driving skills!
