Behind you... Naked!
Ok, the mobo is a Gigabyte 990AX-DS3

Every cooler I have, stops me from using my GSKILL RAM in all 4 slots.

Its fine with the Kingston but thats only 4x2GB and I have 4x4GB GSKill spare but ATM I can only use 2 of them and so I need a cooler that has enough of a gap so as to not press on the ram.

Thanks.

Well some of the air coolers apparently can have their fans raised higher on the heatsinks to allow for this, I have the Noctua NH-D14 which just clears my G-Skill Ripjaws and I am pretty sure you can raise the fans on it also, but don't quote me, I've not tried :)

Im liking the noctua range.
My idiot self bought the 8350 "Retail" and like a fool, I gave the cooler to my mate because I have much better ones, but the simple truth is that they are also blocking off the 2 closest RAM Slots.

I'll have a look at the Noctua range anyway. Thanks.

Of course... Closed loop water! - I didnt think about that.
Looks like the sensible option too as it will also make the thing cooler.

Ok cheers, thats the way I will go then.

H80 doesn't cool better than big air and has more to go wrong.. like the pump.

All of the big twins perform about the same except Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme which is 8c cooler than Silver Arrow SB-E.

You can get Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme for £53.99
Definitely the best performance for cost at the moment.
It has the TY-143 fans which are 2500rpm 130cfm so cool even better at same noise level as H100 and 7c better cooling than H100

Size comparison of most of the big twins

Cooler size comparison (Width x Depth x Height looking from front of case with motherboard laying flat)
K2 . . . . . .= . . . . 8x 6mm pipes 140x128x158mm 146x154x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm PWM fans 43.2mm*
D14 . . . . .= . . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x130x160mm 140x158x160mm w/ only 2011 has PWM fans 44mm*
TC14PE . . . = . . . 5x 8mm pipes 140x134x160mm 140x159x171mm w/fans, PWM adaptor included 40-45mm*
Silver Arrow . = . . 4x 8mm pipes 147x123x163mm 151x149x168mm w/Fans 40.87mm*
SA SB-E . . . .= . . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 170x130x170mm w/ 140mm & 150mm PWM fans 31.9/39/46mm**
SA SB-E Extreme . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 155x130x165mm w/fans Reason it's smaller is 140mm fan vs 150mm fan.
HE01 . . . . .= . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x119c160mm w/ 140x38mm PWM fan
Dark Rock Pro .= . 7x 6mm pipes 133x124x166mm 133x149x166mm w/ 120mm & 135mm PWM fans
*cooler base to bottom fin. (add 8mm for motherboard to bottom fin.)
**fins are at 3 different levels

K2, D14 & TC14 are about same except for TC14 140mm fans & 31mm RAM clearance stack up to 171mm (my R2 is 165mm clearance and TC14 fits)

SB-E is widest by 15mm. Even wider with TY-150 fan = 170.

Extreme with TY-143 fans is still 151.5mm wide.
You can add 8mm to cooler base to bottom fins for total motherboard clearance.

With big coolers like the K2 and the big noctua ones, can you put the fan on either side?

You have a fan in the middle, then can't you put then second fan on either side? I have mine on the right hand side (covering the ram) but i thought you could also put it on the left, towards the case exhaust fan on the back.

If that makes no sense to anyone but myself, i understand.

My little diagram

Im not sure if its good the have the heatsink fan and the case exhaust fan that close though...

Yes, you can put fans on back of towers no problem. Just be sure there is a fan on each tower and the back fan is not too close to exhaust fan. On one build I put the rear exhaust on outside of case for that reason.

I never say never.

NH-U12S is very good but I would not say 100% compatible. There always seems to be an exception.

There could be motherboards with less than 47.5mm from center of CPU to RAM or 63mm from PCI to center of CPU. Like maybe a Mini-ITX board for example.

I haven't meet a board and ram combination yet that it doesn't fit, and I have a lot of tech here.

I went for the Alpenhorn.. Hell, however you pronounce it?

I had a check and the Asus cooler does allow me to fit the GSkills under it, but its an all alumionum cooler and while its very good, its not quite good enough.

Im floating my 8350 at 23c with this alpen cereal
