As my title says my cousin is after a gaming PC for his birthday.

His parents have said a budget of £730 and he needs everything apart from monitor, mouse and keyboard.

The only game he's really interested in is DayZ and I'd like to see him able to play that with decent FPS.

He hasn't got the patience to wait for Haswell chips either.

So can you lovely people do what you do best guys and I'll run it past him.

Also a case that is easy to work with would be fantastic as I'm building it for him no doubt, build log to follow :)

Thanks guys :)

Yeah he does, he just sent me a spec himself and didn't account for the cost of OS, but he does need OS.

And his spec was trying to be as close to mine which he cant do on his budget as I spent over double on mine lol. kid's hey.

I was thinking that an AMD build be more suited to him? or am i wrong?

It depends. Between a i3 and a FX6100, depends on the games. Either gives you room for improvements (8320, i5), Intels tend to be more efficient, hence lesser PSU requirements.

He should definitely have a gpu if he wants to play any games when he gets the computer. That's a really nice build for the price - if you wanted to then maybe downgarde the cpu to an fx-4100 and use the extra money for the first graphics card put forward - the bottleneck won't be on the cpu with that graphics card.

Obviously he's going to want a GPU but I was just wondering if he would be able to make do with Intel HD for a while and save for a good GPU after.

AMD is his best bet for a gaming build right now but I'm simply offering an alternative.

Sorry, my reply came off a bit abrupt. What I meant was that if he is getting this computer for his birthday then he will probally be wanting to use it as soon as he gets it and play games with a decent fps at good settings on the day rather than having to wait and save up for a gpu.

I can recommend the Fractal design core 1000 case if on a budget. Although mini itx, I found it very easy to work with and looks brilliant. Not too sure if it has USB 3.0 though, have to look that up. Good luck on whatever he chooses to do :)

thanks for all the feed back guys, turns out he doesnt need an OS the PC is getting 'accidentally' mixed in with his dads office computers when the IT guys come and upgrade the OS on all of those so the OS is sorted.

and with regards to him being able to hold fire on a GPU I dont think he can as its a gift for his 14th birthday so kinda hard for him to make money at that age.

The only game hes mentioned to me is DayZ, but he tends to like racing titles and first person shooters and fifa, most of which he'll buy for console I'd imagine.

Olivier the first build you did looks like the sort of thing he's spec'd to me, and looks decent enough.

What would you recommend for Arma/DayZ with regards to CPU between the i3 and amd chip, i know how demanding the game is on a cpu but I have only ever played it on my i5 so cant compare it to anything :/

Bit of a rush, but it would be a toss between a i3 and a FX6100, FX6300 for that budget. Will need to do some research. There is a video on youtube showing DaZ footage on a £500 PC, iirc it used an i3.

Your bottleneck would most likely depend on DayZ, which is the most demanding of those games. And of course the up and coming Arma 3.

My guess, a FX6300, a 660 OC, or a 7870.

motherboard is good to go for overclocking later, quick graphics card, decent PSU and case, I like the WD hard drives, they may not be the fastest, but they are reliable and quiet.

Can go with a cheaper board. Not sure he is up to overclocking, but I like a good board.
