Graphic & Sound issues

Not sure were to post this but i thought this section may be best.

Since around early April ive noticed textures in games going funny, like their not loading properly maybe, also during this the background sound will cut out, for example in game music etc and all i can hear are the main sound effects such as firing or footsteps etc. If if try to quit or fast travel (in BL2), the games will crash for about 20 seconds before responding again.

Its happening in 3 games so far, Borderlands 2, Metro Last light and Farcry 3. There are some screenshots below documenting this. Ive no idea what it is, ive tried many remedies such as updating drivers, CHKDSK on my Data drive, Ccleaner, defrag etc. Ive even did a clean install on Windows 7 exactly a week ago and hey ho the problem still persists even though ive installed fresh drivers etc.

As you can see on BL2, look at the textures on the ammo.

Im thinking this may be either driver or hardware related, but i have no clue what to do next. I really need some help to try and troubleshoot this as ive no idea :(

Ah sorry, i got the driver version wrong, im already on 320.18. The problem was the same with 314.22 drivers also. Any Ideas?

Yes Direct X and Visual C Runtimes are up to date. As for driver settings, ive restored defaults in 3D settings on Nvidia control panel, again problem still persists, so thats one thing that can be ruled out also.

Thanks for the help guys, ive no clue to as whats going on still, its been like this since early April, have no idea what caused it.

Im going to take a inside i think and look at the card etc, any other suggestions would be great :)

I really don't know, could be the card or PSU.

Do you know anyone who would let you try the card in their rig?

There are many good PSUs out there, please do have a look at our many PSU reviews as we have loads of recommended PSUs for you to check out in there. What would happen if your PSU can't cope with the load:

Bad 3D performance
Crashing games
Spontaneous reset or imminent shutdown of the PC
Freezing during gameplay
PSU overload can cause it to break down

The top symptom maybe like you are getting?


On a side note, I have pulled out my PSU today as I was getting a few resets and then the PC rebooting with a "please refit your PCIE cable" messages, I guess the pins on the connector are lose..
 
Agreed, could be possible, ive had the PSU a while, about 4 1/2 years in total, its an Enermax 1000W which i thought would well cut it. Ive heard about PSU's loosing watts over time but never believed any of it.

Going to take a look at my connectors etc, and will let you know.

Hi again

Had a look and the PCI-E power connectors are secure, everything else seems fine too. This only happens in games btw, which makes hardware draw the most power i suppose.

Anyway just fired up Borderlands 2 and it froze about 3 times in the space of minute, ive never seen that before. Usually it would happen after an hour or maybe 20 minutes into the game.

Im wanting this to be a driver issue or something but i im worried that may not be the case. What would be the next step given the circumstances?
 
Just an update,

Ran a couple of benchmarks using 3D mark, they were fine and actually scored higher than last time. However i did get a black screen when it was switching from one test to the next when doing the benchmark. I could move the mouse cursor so seemed it like just crashed the application only. However the whole benchmark was good, so think that might rule out my card being the issue.

I also ran Prime blend test for 14 hours overnight to test my overclock, it passed and its stable so the CPU i think can be ruled out too.

Im defiantly thinking it could be the PSU, ive had it for 5 years now and it could be on its way out, what would be the opinions on this?

Also if i decide to try a new PSU, i was thinking of something from Corsair or Enermax, would i really need a 1000W though to power my rig?

500w will be enough for your PC.

Have you tried doing a dummy install on another drive just to rule out any software issues?
 
I did do a clean install just over a week ago, it wasnt on another drive however, the only other i have is my Data drive but thats obviously full of important data. Everything is upto date after the clean install as well, drivers, Direct X visual C etc.

I think ive tried everything regarding software to be honest, i cant help but think its pointing towards a hardware issue.
 
Just another update,

Ive decided to go for a new PSU, as the one i have is 5 years old now and i think its on it way out.

Ive decided to go for the Corsair AX860I. Yes it might be a bit overkill but if i ever want to try SLI sometime, the extra power will come in handy.

Il report back one its installed and after ive done some more testing.

Just wondering, forgive me if im stating the obvious, but does the PSU sit with the fan facing upward or downward?

The fan only really matters if its on carpet, have it facing up so its not sucking crud into it or blocked by deep pile and you have vents in the cases floor.

Yes i was thinking fan face up, computer is sat on the end of my desk, seen pics of the psu fan faced downward, but il be sticking with the fan upward like the one i have now.

If it's on a desk and there is space for the fan to breath, then I would have it downwards.
