Non traditional board games

Wife loved Settlers of Catan.

Going to pick up ticket to ride europe next

My wife enjoys TTR Europe :)

I'm thinking of getting Settlers of Catan, how does it play with 2? are you playing with one of the 2 player rule variants?

Also to start with I have been told to also get Seafarers?

Had a cracking game of Formula D last night. 3 players, 2 cars each, 2 laps of the Race City circuit.

One of my cars crashed out on the first lap when it overshot a corner in hilarious fashion and my 2nd car went on to win the race by a huge margin!

My dad was comfortably in 2nd & 3rd places with my mum bringing up the rear. With some unlucky dice rolls my dad bogged down on the last hairpin and my mum stole 2nd place at the line!

However since my parents brought both cars home successfully I lost on overall points with my mum ultimately winning!

Tense racing though! :D

So... who's going to the UK Games Expo in Birmingham next weekend?

The wife and I will be there overnight on Saturday. Thinking about joining one of the scheduled Roleplaying groups, but need to figure out if newbies are welcome to those or not.

I went last year and had a fantastic time. Sadly, I'm at a wedding this weekend :/

Last year the signup system indicated whether things were beginner friendly or not. If in doubt, contact the GM if you can.

Plays good with 2. not using any special rules.

Can you just turn up and have a look around these type of events, or do you have to join in etc?

My missus and I have only really started getting into boardgames over last month or so, so were still noobs with it all lol.

You can turn up on any of the days over the weekend, pay entry fee and have at it. There's a trader hall that should be packed with stalls and demonstrations, bring 'n' buy table, playtest area (where you can just walk over and join in playtesting prototype games), seminars and all sorts going on.

I'm assuming many of the people sitting with games out waiting for players won't be adverse to teaching people how to play as well -- but you most certainly don't have to "join in" on anything. Just do your own thing, have a look around, and have fun.

That's what we'll be doing. I'm a completely awkward social retard at the best of times, so it'll take a bit of encouragement before I approach anyone playing games to start with! :D

Well, spent yesterday at the Expo, stayed over in the hotel getting a little (too) drunk, and came back up home today.

The Expo itself was brilliant -- TONS of traders and stands, playtesting going on all over the place, taught tutorials etc. Only thing that was annoying was the attitude of one Fantasy Flight rep who refused to sign our prize draw sheet (you had to get a stamp/signature from a few different retailer/publisher stands to submit your sheet to the draw) because we hadn't sat down and played any of the games they had set out. Reason being that we were only there for the day and didn't have the time to sit down and play something we weren't interested in (or already own, in the case of much of FF's releases). Was a particularly unfriendly response and not something we expected as nobody else had an issue giving us a signature while we walked around.

Everything else, though, was great, including...

GIANT CASTLE PANIC!

This was a lot of fun with a few random people and a guy dressed as an elf teaching the rules etc. We managed to win with one piece of the castle still standing due to a very lucky rolling boulder. :D

Also spied giant versions of PANDEMIC and TICKET TO RIDE, but forgot to snap pics.

Came away in the end with this haul, along with a couple of Summoner Wars faction decks:

The copy of GUARDS! GUARDS! was a prize for the wife and I winning the LUCHADOR - MEXICAN WRESTLING DICE tag-team championship. :D Well, I say the wife and I, but in reality I was pinned and knocked out, and she made a storming comeback and took out both of our opponents.

I'd really recommend keeping an eye out on Kickstarter over the coming month or so, as LUCHADOR will be going on there. The guys behind it were great fun and very friendly, and the game itself is a total blast with 4 players. I have a constant itching to play it now, and can't wait until it hits general release. Will most certainly be backing it on KS for whatever the purchase price is -- possibly more depending on the stretch goals. I think a video of our final bout and subsequent victory will be going on their Facebook page soon. :)

I noticed Stak Bots nestling in your photo above - a quick Google, found the site on Tuesday, and within 3 minutes I'd ordered it - and it dropped through the door this morning!

Looks like quite a fun game :)

It's very good indeed! Well worth the fiver they were charging for it at the Expo -- just couldn't say no at that price.

It's fast paced, easy to play, fun, and comes with multiple game types that you can try out. Tiny little box, too, so I reckon I'll be carrying it with me quite often on nights out. :D

Received King of Tokyo as a wedding present. Not had chance to play yet, but looking forward to doing so.

lol I have been playing this and Lords of Waterdeep this week

King Of Tokyo is fun and very fast so you can play 3 or 4 times before it gets dull. Out of 10 games of this ive won about 8 - aggression wins usually :D its fun and quirky and you get so many dice.:p:p:p

Lords of Waterdeep - urgh i dont like this one much. I dont tend to like any game where there are 8 turns. Its not complicated but its a pure strategy game and very tactical if you play like that. I never try to win too hard cos its just too much of a counting/resource management/tactics with no randomness from dice. It certainly drags on with 3 people id hate to play with more. would bore me turdless. The GF takes it ultra seriously, she has won every game by a big margin. So i beat her senseless in the monster one.

Still playing settlers of katan - i love it :p ashamed to admit it. :(

Your dislikes of LoW are exactly the reasons that I love it. There *is* an element of randomness offered by the intrigue and quest cards (not to mention your Lord), but it's not the be all and end all (as it should be imo. I generally dislike randomness in games unless it can be mitigated e.g. Eclipse) . It does exactly what it's designed to : Be an entry level, worker placement game with a tacked on theme (to appeal to non-boardgamers). The length is a nice plus point (5 players is around 90 minutes). Even though this is probably the lightest game that I play regularly, I'm very much looking forward to the expansion.

However, to each their own, and I can't fault you for your opinion ;)
