Laptop and HDD problems

Greetings all, a couple of problems I'm hoping for some help with...

The laptop has stopped working, turns itself off after being on for about 2 seconds. Nothing comes on the screen however the fan starts to spin. It's a HP Pavillion DV6 laptop and google suggests this is a common problem in which the motherboard has broken?

Secondly there are files I need off the laptops harddrive, it's a SATA drive so I've tried to plug it into my PC however I'm not sure how to access it. I guess I was expecting it to work like plugging in a USB - obviously not, so some help on getting access to that would be brilliant.

Cheers

DV6 = Junk, the motherboard is almost certainly scrap and not worth replacing.

The HDD should show up in My Computer when connected to your PC. If not, verify that it shows in Drive Management

Thanks for the reply d_brennen.

Im a complete noob when it comes to PCs/laptops. If I was to get the motherboard replaced in the laptop, would the replacement be the same type of motherboard thus leaving it likely to break again in the future? Or do different types exist that are less likely to breakage?

The drive isn't showing up in disk management or my computer. It's making all the noises as if it's connected and the mouse loading icon appears when it's plugged in but that's about it.

You are plugging it into an internal SATA port, right? Have you plugged it in with the PC off and then booted? SATA isn't so keen on hot plugging, especially on older machines. A USB to SATA cable like this is another option

The boards for that model (and many more from HP/Dell/Sony) have an inherent flaw, and a "replacement" these days is likely going to be a refurbished motherboard which will go faulty sooner rather than later

Oh yep got it working, I was trying to plug it in with the PC already running

Had to switch the leads across as it was trying to boot up from the laptops harddrive on the PC but it's on now.

I'm guessing you would advise against replacing the laptops motherboard?

By all means replace away, but be sure you know that the replacement boards available are all refurbished, as in baked in someones oven, melted with a hot air gun or perhaps reflowed properly with a IR reflow station. Last one is unlikely. The will fail again. You might get a week, a month or ten years service out of them...

Careful with those harsh words. My HP has lasted me 3 years and has only broken down on me 7 times!

...

Wait yeah I see your point.

Only 7? You got lucky!
