Is a 770 a worthwhile upgrade for the money?

At £330 is the 770 a worthwhile upgrade over my 480? I do prefer nvidia cards but I feel nvidia has been extracting the urine regarding price / performance lately :(

Ivan, stop beating around the bush and go buy one :)

If you prefer Nvidia, the 770 is sitting alongside the 7970GE and kicking and getting kicked in some games however, the 7970 comes with free games, so this is a plus for AMD.

I know you was after the Titan cooler but trust me, they are not that good. Custom coolers are far better (decent ones of course).

Is it really 70/80% faster than the 480 though? I was thinking about 50% tops. How will the 770 do at 1440p as I'm planning a new monitor at some point.

I would suggest 770 at 1080p and 7970 ghz at 1440p based on performance terms and overclock ability. As an overall package id personally go with the 7970 ghz for the brilliant games package which you can either sell to recoup some costs or play with yourself.

I have to agree with Matt above.

Realistically, the GTX780 "should be" the card you upgrading to, but thanks to the comparison to the Titan and giving people a false sense of "good value", the price of the x80 has been sky-lifted from the usual £400-£500 price range to £550+ instead...

Not a bad shout young Matthew. The games are still selling in the MM (not so high) but that does make the 7970 better value. I still think we shouldn't forget the 7950, just because the GTX 770 is out. Still a fantastic card and cheaper to Crossfire in the long run if more grunt is needed.

Definitely.

I hope the games don't lose value too quickly i've got a few i intend to sell soon. :p

Yeh, I know I'm a bit rubbish when it comes to making purchase decisions :p I'm a real stickler for feeling that I'm getting decent value for my cash which I certainly wouldn't be feeling with the 780 or Titan. The games that come with the AMD cards I already have bought anyway, so no real perk there.

The 770 is a good upgrade in terms of power, but the price in comparison to a very similar performing 7950@1150Mhz for ~£200, the cash must hurt when it exits your nostrils in a rapid manner.

Yea...I don't really have a problem with the current GTX670 price, but at £100 more and being a new gen card released nearly 15 months after the 7950, it is somewhat embarrassing to not even being 15% faster than the 7950 when both are overclocked.

The multiple cards rebadge back in the GeForce 9000 series at least somewhat justifiable considering the GeForce 8000 series were faster than the ATI HD2000 series and even the HD3000 series by reasonble margins, but for the GTX 600 series vs HD7000 series, that was not the case at all, particularly with the GTX670 and GTX680 being cut-down/mid-range part to begin with since the very beginning.

I do much prefer nvidia cards and always have. Problem is that amd cards are better value for the performance they give, no doubt about it. Ugh, maybe put off my new monitor until the next round of cards appears. Don't want to be ripped off by nvidia and their rebranding old cards policy.
