Well, my laptop is officially sold tomorrow, so I will be building in about a month's time. I am making a gaming desktop for £500 pounds (+ the OS). The build I have got is:

GPU: MSI HD 7850 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards - £10 Cashback -- £149.99

CPU: Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail -- £92.99

OS: Microsoft Windows 8 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00403) -- £79.99

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD -- £65.99

RAM: Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) -- £59.99

Motherboard: **B Grade** Gigabyte H61MA-D3V Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard -- £42.00

PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020046-UK) -- £39.95

Case: Xigmatek Asgard Pro Gaming Case - Black -- £32.99

DVD drive: OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM -- £19.99

+ 12.50 Shipping

Total: £598.87

Is there anything extra I need such as thermal paste or screws? What kind of tools would I need? Is this build worth the price?

Thanks.

What games would you like to play, and also you haven't specced a monitor, I assume you have one, what resolution is it?

Edit: Have you got the parts already?

Personally, I'd stick with Windows 7 64bit, Win 8 many people have problems with as its still relatively new and untill all the updates are done windows 7 might still be your best bet.......cheaper too

AMD say that a 500w power supply is recommended, although the 430w may well be sufficient (currently around 300w for your system)

That motherboard my need to have a BIOS flash to accept the IvyBridge processor, so best to check first.

The thermal paste will be pre-applied on the stock Intel Cooler, you will need some more if you plan on putting an after market one in its place.
All Screws should come with the case but all you'll need is a Philips Head (posi-drive) screwdriver.

Oh and common sense :D

EDIT.....
You might have problems with that ram and mobo for compatibility...That motherboard supports upto 1333mhz ram, and anything faster will be downgraded to 1333 unless you manually OC the RAM
The module number on the RAM you selected doesn't appear in the board's QVL list so although it might still work, you might end up will a lower speed or CL type.

^^^ My RAM on my board is meant to be 1600mhz, but as the ram isnt on my qvl (kinda like unsupported) my ram can be set two ways, both of which are not what I bought.

@Hiburnate, the monitor I have is actually my TV. I don't know the resolution, but It is 26 inch I think, and has VGA + HDMI input. I plan to play DayZ and Minecraft on it, I know I want more games, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. :/ I don't have the parts yet so I can change anything without any hassle.

@Mathius, I was going to get windows 8 for performance, but if 7 is cheaper, I will probably go for that. I don't know too much about motherboards and computers, so I have no idea what a BIOS flash is. If the mobo is essentially "downgrading" the RAM, I could also get a different motherboard, but I have no idea which one as I don't have a clue about motherboards.

The mobo I have selected will need a Bios update. But if you ask Ocuk, they will most likely do it for you. The board will run the ram at 1600, also has USB 3.0 and 2x6gb sata ports, so you can add an ssd at a later date. Now, if you order before midnight tonight, don`t forget to add the 5% discount voucher code (20KFANS).

Comes to £570 with the discount. But you will need to get in touch with OCUK before it`s delivered to make sure they will update the Bios.

Do you mean get that whole build orbjust the motherboard? 619 pounds is over my budget. Even 600 is stretching it.

I based both builds on the understanding you were buying yesterday, hence the reference to the 5% discount in Post #5. With the 5%, the price was similar to your spec, but as you don`t` seem to have bought it , so both specs are irrelevent now.

Ah, sorry about that. I should have said that in the first post. I will probably be buying the components in the next week or so.

Well, I have all the money ready. I would like one for around £550, but if there is a good build renowned for gaming for just a little more or less, I can change my budget, but I can't go over £600. Which pieces would you recommend?

If you can't decide between Win7 and 8 just use the Evaluation Edition of 8 for free on a 3month trial. Windows 8.1 will be a service pack of sorts and brings back the start menu, it too should get a preview to try for free. This gives you £80ish back to spend on components and you can worry about buying the OS much later on.

This 7870XT is closely related to the 7950 it's amazing bang for buck. On the Z77 mobo (the LX2 is cheaper but not as good technically) you could upgrade to a Sandy or Ivy i5K and overclock it once they are going cheapish 2nd hand. Case is packed with kit and has a nice window to see the internals. RAM has overclocking potential but it does have yellow LEDs not sure if that will bother you. PSU is semi modular which really does help with cable management and certainly helps in the Zalman chassis
