I have to ask. What is the point in chasing these? Do they get paid and why?

Surely most of the stuff they do can be done remotely?

how do you remotely examine a physical phenomenon? its like asking a volcanologist to study volcanoes from watching youtube videos of volcanoes?

They were at a distance then the tornado took a violent turn north, Tim was one of the safest stormchasers.

He was still a total nutcase if you ask me! Some videos on Storm Chasers he got ridiculously close.

Very, very few actually get paid for it. Most just sell their videos for a couple of hundred dollars to news stations but even that is becoming harder and harder with so many recreational chasers out there. Few, if any, make a living from chasing storms. OK University naturally have a meteorology department and get involved.

Found seatbelted in his car and the others were pulled out of the car by the tornado with one body found as far as half a mile from the car. I can't imagine a more terrifying situation than that.

I see this tornado has been upgraded to an EF5, and the largest on record at 2.6 miles wide with wind speeds up to 296 mph. Must have been terrifying to get caught up in that !

Tim And Paul Samaras funerals today. Over the Rainbow was played during the service. A fitting end. Still cant believe he got killed, really gutted about it.

Looks like the Chicago area will get some severe weather later on. There's also the possibility of a derecho as well.

I'm a couple of hundred miles north of Chicago and right on the edge of the predicted severe zone. We're currently not under any watches or warnings at all, so I'm not expecting anything major happening here.....they're usually overly cautious.
