After buying one of those qnix monitors capable of 1440p@120hz , im now looking at upgrading my 7850 to make the most of it.

Is a 7970 ghz edition my best choice ?

If you don't mind a multi gpu setup then i would suggest a 7950 xfire setup which provides good performance at 1440p. Currently using this setup myself with no problems.

If you sell the 8 games included with the two cards you'll be looking at about £425 or less for two cards that will easily beat a titan which is at least twice the price if not more. 2x7950 will get you closer to 120fps at 1440p than a 780/titan would.

ok, i should have said my board doesn't support xfire/sli so was looking for the best single card solution

also ive ruled the 780 out due to cost , was looking at a card costing below £400

For 1440p gaming you want your gfx to have atleast 3 gigs of vram on it for those memory intense games. xfired 7950 from the red camp should do the trick and be rather cheap. If you are going for the green team you want more power than what a single gtx 680 or 770 can offer and make sure you pick a card with more than 2 gigz of vram on it.

If he is only able to afford a single card and a board that's only able to support a single card, 2GB/3GB of VRAM wont matter either will do fine as he wont have enough grunt to push settings high enough to use what's available.

2gb vram is not a issue at 1440

OP has said he can not xfire

Btw Tonester, most of the Korean monitors on the bay may be able to "overclock" but not by much, up to 75hz at best, and even then they introduce frame skipping.

If you want 1440@120hz the only monitor I know will work for sure is the catleap "2b" version.

+1 7970. :)

If the GTX 780 is out then the next best GPU is the 7970, its a very capable 1440P GPU and also very good value for money, so that would be my choice.
The 384Bit - 3GB vRam on the 7970 is better suited vs the 256Bit - 2GB on the GTX 770 at higher res.
