The main reason is its hard to predict when a young teenage girls cervix undergoes its first metastatic change, which is completely natural. It causes the columnar epithelial cells that form the inside of the cervix to become exposed to the vaginal environment, that is filled with squamous epithelial cells instead. This is known as the flattening of the cervix and causes the columnar epithelial cells to change into squamous cells. When the cervix returns to its normal shape, these cells then exist on the inside of the cervix, allowing the virus to grow unhindered. This is also linked to being the direct cause of HPV infiltration in women that can lead to cervical cancer (HPV type 16, 18, 31 and 45 namely)

Sorry, with regards to cost I meant in terms of which of the two HPV vaccines were offered rather than the age they were offered at. I see your point though. Part of me thinks if they offered it any earlier even more stupid parents that can't see the longer term would prevent their kids being vaccinated though.

Parent's have nothing to do with it. Political fear of the "nanny state" and on-going austerity are the more likely causes.

A large number of parents are already refusing it - my opinion is that offering it to kids at a younger age will just see more parents taking a stupid short term view that their little darlings will never grow up and benefit from the vaccine. Given at the moment they are refusing to have their kids vaccinated on grounds that don't exist, I don't think it would take a lot to significantly worsen the uptake rate.

You'd be suprised, I know people that have heart conditions they're meant to watch, such as dangerously low blood pressure and borderline dangerously high blood pressure that don't know what their blood pressure reading even means.. And thats something thats taught in GCSE biology :p
