GTX 770/780/Titan: Have we all been duped?

This is exactly why I say nVidia is myopic, they don't seem to be able to see beyond "now" and they've displayed this many many times.

Dangerous game to play considering they are on zero income from consoles this round, if you price out and alienate your current customers:

I doubt I will be upgrading that 580 to another nvidia part because of their underhanded play recently.

Apart from said sheep, who is going to purchase your goods?

This made me chuckle :)

:)

I have to say, apart from the usual people who know what they're talking about there's an alarming number of people who don't understand basic market economics in this thread.

OP, I wouldn't say we have been "duped". Nvidia has simply taken advantage of the fact that they can leverage the performance advantage of the new cards by pricing them appropriately based on what consumers are currently used to paying for the 600 Series.

It is crafty, but if the enthusiast crowd is willing to drop 1000s of Pounds into the top end, again and again and again and without a compelling alternative from AMD in the same tiers, well....it's their ballpark for now :/

Should have read:

As some of us are not sheep!;)

For every gregster that aggressively puts forward the justification of high priced Nvidia hardware, there are 20 boomsticks that scream foul play for unjustifiable pricing.:p

^
That's what happens when you get too greedy though.

No doubt it will go full circle if AMD release a massive iceberg to sink a Titan though, sparking a slow lingering movement to consoles until PC moves forward again, if it can.

Madness as Nvidia are only shooting themselves in the foot by pleasing investors today without thinking about tomorrow.

If a new price bracket for the second fastest gpu is 'two thumbs up' and that's the best way to keep desktop gaming alive and prosperous, then PC's are doomed.

Considering the way technology is evolving so rapidly, it's not the best way to go about it.

Are you still butthurt from looking a fool with your VRAM nonsense and have to give snidy comments like this? Very lame

You need to look further than your nose and sucking up to anyone who now has an AMD card. It seriously does make me chuckle when you get posts like this from your hero:

The bitterness of not being able to get one yet fills them rage.. It boils up inside them until they can't take it anymore and must troll in order to make themselves feel better..

Oooh it's expensive..

Oooh it downclocks..

Oooh Lara's hair ! (Oh wait that was another thread)

:D

It's miles behind the Titan, how many 7970's can reach 1200mhz no problems aswell..

If you have the money the Titan is epic, well worth it imho. No other dual setup comes close to it.. If I was considering 2 x 670's or 2 x 7970's or a 7990. I would take a long look at reviews, check the min fps, check out the weird latency issue thing that AMD has. Consider the extra ram, lower power consumption..

I can tell you from my own experience with all of these cards, that nothing comes close to the Titan, it is a monster.

Check out that screaming of foul play... :D

This made me chuckle :)

:D:D:D:D Me too...Funny stuff.

If someone can tell me why they feel the need to attack something they have no wish to buy, I would appreciate that. I don't attack the price of the 3970X or the price of Bose speakers or the price of anything that is expensive. I certainly don't go out of my way to make people who buy this stuff look and feel stupid but in a GPU forum it is accepted.

Please show me once where I have recommended a Titan card. Even in my review of them, I couldn't, as I felt they were overpriced.

Pathetic.

The early joy of my Titan was soon replaced with overwhelming buyers remorse, especially when overclocked 7970's were approaching my Titan's bench scores. I had a long look at the card and was thinking, are you worth £850 to me?

Answer was hell no ! Out the door my friend. Got my money back and was able to pick up brand new 7950's for £130 each and performance is better than what I had with my Titan :p

Lesson learned, don't buy into Nvidia hype.. Plus wait for prices to come down.

By the way if your a baller and you have a lot of disposable income then none of the above will apply anyway. For me I weigh up what I purchase, if I feel something was to expensive it kills my enjoyment of it. That's what happened with the Titan. Luckily I was able to get my money back so it's ok, now I know don't ever spend over £400 for a single GPU. It will just leave me feeling bitter and resentful towards my wallet :p :-D

I still plan on getting a pair of 780's, just not until next year and decent prices..

It's not that people don't wish to buy it Greg. They want the performance but feel the asking price is too high for the performance increase.
I really don't think anyone is trying to make anyone look stupid. I bought a Titan and to be honest i think peoples criticism of it is justified.

As you said yourself it is overpriced but you like me felt we needed the performance and rightly or wrongly we paid the price. You really shouldn't take it so personally.

^^ good post, totally agree.

I'm the kind of person who likes to try things for myself and after a long play with the Titan I realized it was to pricey for me to justify to myself to keep, and settled on something cheaper. I don't know why that would offend Gregster, I have never knocked the Titan performance, the issue is with it's performance VS it's price.

In all honesty I prefer Nvidia cards especially in a dual setup, when you take price into the equation though AMD cards offer so much better bang for buck that it can't be ignored and more often than not I would go with AMD.

*Just found out my gfriend is pregnant today (Again) gotta watch what I spend now. Baby's aren't cheap !!* (:

The part that mentions me in bold is the reason I took it personal?

I couldn't give a hoot but people need to understand what duped/ripped off actually means. If I bought a Titan and it turned out to be a 7970 instead, I would have been ripped off/duped. People know the prices of GPU's and there are so many reviews including user reviews and if they feel any of them are expensive, there are alternatives.

When I buy a car, I have my budget and try to find something in my budget that takes my fancy. The cars well over my budget that I want, I ignore. I don't feel the need to rant on a forum that the prices are a rip off, I accept that price and move along....Why is that so hard to do on a GPU forum?

I had a long winded reply typed up but thought what's the point :)

I honestly don't see anything wrong with people complaining about the price, it doesn't bother me. If you don't like people complaining about the price just ignore those threads ? like you said if people don't like the price?
I also don't agree with the car example. More expensive cars come with lots of extra luxurious features not just a slight speed increase. With Titan we get a shiny cooler and extra memory :p

Anyway that's it from me on this subject until AMD come out with their ridiculously overpriced response :)

Nothing wrong with your boomstick then.

I can just imagine the Nvidia meeting....

PR man
So I have an idea for a new product

The Suits
Go on

PR Man
We will release the fastest card on the market and shout very loudly about it

The suits
No we have done that, sales are small and profit margins to match

PR Man
No not this time. I have discovered a new phenomenon

The Suits
Really? Please continue

PR Man
Its an internet phenomenon called an 'epeen' - no sniggering at the back please

The Suits
Oh erm, yes, well, so what's that then...

PR Man
Its the virtual realisation of a persons ego tied directly to their computers performance. It results in a neurological change where the ratio of cost is no longer relevant to said performance, as long as that performance is top tier, no matter for how short a period. Epeen.

The Suits
So... just how much performance and what price are you thinking of?

PR Man
Ah epeen only needs to be fed so much to flourish. We aim for 50% increase and a £900 price tag

The Suite
No **** (morning coffee wasted)

PR
(awaits response)

The Suite
You're serious aren't?

PR man
Yes

The Suit
You pull this off and you can have my wife

PR Man
Done, and done.......

Very well explained and quite possibly exactly what happened

imfao, you have hit it right on the head or should l say Epeen. This is one of the reason's l don't buy the top of the range GPU's the cost. l buy something like 470 overclock it, my Toxic 6950@6970 is still doing fine.

Been looking at a GTX 770 for a upgrade but will wait while till the price settle's down, was thinking of treating myself to a 780 but £550 it's a lot of dosh.

You need to look at more than Die size the 480 had 3 Billion transistors the Titan packs 7.1 Billion into the same size die around 529 mm2 die. That is an extra 4.1 Billion switches squeezed in.

Vram issue is subjective, plenty taking my view and yours, forum users views are hardly definitive answers on the subject, twas only intended as a useless attempted deflection from the issue discussed here anyway-Nvidia's pricing.

Which still leaves you as this forums loudest defender of Nvidia's pricing, whenever there is dismay, you are always there to point out otherwise.

Booms quotes you brought out the digger for was simply purchase justification at the time anyway as he has since been slapped across the face with a barrel of coffee whilst having a nap.

Technology moves forward though, mobile phones don't/haven't exponentially increased each gen in comparison-for example, an S4 contract hasn't had a ~75% price increase slapped on it.
