Haswell Spec £1000

Things don't really work like that, but MSI 7950 Twin Frozrs have documented issues that they don't seem able to fix, so currently they are to be avoided.

I know what your saying but after have 4 out of 5 HIS cards replaced that was enough.

The cards weren't posting even so it isn't exactly like the fan issue that MSI are having. Also assuming it is most likely a batch of dodgy fan controllers for MSI as it does the same via Linux controls as well as Win7.

Anyways I think we have agreed he is going for a 250GB SSD and not the 1TB drive for now. So no need for more than 2 SATA at this time.

If you want to try a completely different 7950 then check out:

Also colour co-ordinates and we all know how important that can be :p

Cheers for the input guys, do all 7950's come with free games?

They do

It's not just the fan speed, it's overheating as well.

Way too many have had those issues, and I have had 2 myself that had the same issue.

Swapped them out for a pair of HIS cards and no issues with them.

So really, MSI Twin Frozr 7950s just aren't worth the risk.

The mobo I specced comes with a cooler.

I'm using that cooler and board , getting around 28-30c idle and 52c under load (It's pretty warm in this room though)

BTW your board should come with sata cables , the gigabyte one with the free cooler has 4 sata cables

Thanks. Is the MSI board much better than the gigabyte board inc cooler? What benefits does the MSI have?

One last thing, should I apply thermal paste to the CPU or not? He's not planning to overclock it but not sure if I should anyway?

The retail heatsink has the paste already applied.

But for future reference, you must use thermal paste even if you are at stock, don't fit a cooler to the CPU surface without any.

standard intel/amd coolers come with that blutac junk applied.

aftermarket coolers like the one bundled with the gigabyte mobo come with a small syringe of paste enough for 3 or so uses normally

Brill so if I get the gigabyte bundle with the cooler I will be sorted?

Also any good application guides for the paste?

Just put a nice pea sized blob in the middle of the chip and when you tighten the cooler down, it will spread the paste out evenly.

yea pea sized blob in the middle let the cooler crush it.

with the cooler bundled with that gigabyte mobo you have to screw the cooler to the board via screws that go through the back of the board so it's a bit of a hassle unless you balance the board over the edge of a box or something carefully whilst you do it.

The instructions say to tighten the screws to the end of the threads (not sure if I went that tight) but I assume that means it's impossible to over tighten it.

It also says for 1156 do NOT use the clear plastic spacers even though the illustration shows them being used on all the different pictures.

I assume it is the same for socket 1150 so I left them off, do use the rubber ones though like it shows you.

Tbh the cooler sounds a lot harder to install than I found it
