I was just curious what settings do you guys use with your Creative Sound Blaster Z / ZX cards? I'm trying to configure it best for games and music. I find for music to switch off all the SBX studio features for examples but they're better when used in games but unsure what slider settings to have.

You aren't going to like this answer :p, but here goes!!

Off for music is probably best, but sometimes it's nice to have the crystaliser on when playing low quality mp3's.

For games, well, nobody can help you really, because it's all what you think is good. I don't use the SBX surround at all when I am using speakers, but if I have my headphones on I turn it on. On other forums I see people using lots of different settings for the SBX surround from 10% to 91% to 100%

And it varies from games to game as well.

So, in short, there isn't one setting of sbx surround that works better than others. Just try various settings and see which one sounds best. :)

I thought this would be the case... I found the SBX settings gave a weird/distorted sort of sound with my speakers and made mp3's sound different which I didn't like. I found it to be good with headphones though guess i'll just have to have a play around.

what's the point in buying a £80 sound card just to turn all the advanced features off..?

I wouldn't call them advanced features, I would just call them features, like home cinema receivers have a lot of features like dolby pro-logic, DTS-NEO etc etc, but most people recommend turning these off because they change the the sound quality of the music.

For gaming it's different, you turn on the features that you think make the game sound best to you.

I use the crystalizer and speaker size settings a little as well as the graphic equalizer a little to dull the mid tones a bit. It makes my T1 headphones a little less brutal lol
