Yeah, what is the official line on it? I'll always move in a lane if I'm holding someone up, but otherwise I won't move in a lane if I can already see a reason why I'll be having to pull out again.

I think they should also fine drivers who don't let other drivers merge in turn.

It's not my fault you moved over too early the lane is still open for use until the end.

It's still pushing in, no matter how you dress it. If you see a line of cars waiting, you driving to near the front of that and asking to be let in is queue jumping

I kind of understand this. I mean, we have a limit of 70mph on Britains motorways, yet 99% of all cars travelling in the fast lane will be travelling above that limit anyway! People in the middle lane "tend" to do 70 mph, so its kind of like a funny middle ground.

For instance, if lane 1 and lane 2 were relatively occupied and both doing 70mph and I was in lane 3 also doing 70mph, I would gaurantee that I would have a whole load of people behind me getting more and more aggrevated at the fact that I was only doing 70 mph. Gauranteed. So am I hogging lane 3?

To me, its a contentious subject.

I can happily use all three lanes of a motorway - the left lane, and the two overtaking lanes, without going over 70mph.

Or you could do what you're supposed to do and either get infront or fall back a bit and with a safe distance join lane 1 again if you want to sit at 70mph with everyone else doing 70mph like in your scenario you'd all just line up and trudge along?

The offense is caused by the vehicle NOT letting another vehicle in.

What's contentious? It's an overtaking lane, you're not overtaking if you're going the same speed. GTFO the way!

Srsly though, I'd be flashing you for it. It's **** poor driving and inexcusable.

The shear volume of traffic often necessitates driving in lane 3.

I wasn't suggesting this was typical of MY driving, but "poor driving", or just obeying the speed limit?

I don't follow this. Traffic density does not necessitate moving into an overtaking lane unless the traffic in question is going slower than you are, which is not the case in your example.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why is it difficult to maintain a safe braking distance and a constant speed if everybody else is doing it?

Use both lanes and merge in turn. If everyone uses one lane, the queue is twice as long and backs up along the road further. Simples.
