Hey guys,

A rather odd game query. I have always been a die hard DoW/DoW 2 and Space Marine fan, however I have grown a little bored of that franchise and was recalling when I briefly played SuppComm in its early days. I remember the online community at the time was ok but I never really managed to get any online games going.

I would like to start playing SuppComm 2 and was wondering how it compares against SC2? What is the average length of an online game given the epic scale and all the micro management?

Is there any particular reason I should choose one over the other. I'm not a fan of quick games as they get boring quite quickly hence no longer a fan of DoW 2. I'm more a build, expand type strategy player.

From what I heard back in the day people said SupCom 2 wasn't as good as a previous version. Can't remember which SupCom people always bang on about as being the best one but I'm sure they shall be along soon to help out!

Yeah, that pretty much what I thought to be honest - SupCom 1 is supposed to be the "purer" version and a lot of people seem to criticise the second one for being "dumbed down" a bit!

Personally I love it! Not played it for ages but had some cracking back and forth battles!

Starcraft 2 on the other hand, I've only had a brief blast while I had a free trial but it did seem very "busy" on the screen - although I perhaps didn't get the full feel of it!

I'm tempted to try it now though as you can pick up both the game and the expansion pack for about 17 quid each!

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is the best in the series.

SupCom2 is really for consoles, and very brief online fights. Not remotely satisfying, but may be OK for short gaming stints online.

Cheers for that mate. What was the online community like for SupComm, friendly?

To be honest I only ever played once or twice online as I usually play against (or with) people I know!

I did have one 2-hour game that I ultimately lost but thoroughly enjoyed it! I had a Monkeylord Spiderbot chasing down his ACU and without realising it he stormed in and killed mine! :p

I enjoy playing Supreme Commander 2, though I know that the first one is a bigger scale. However I find the second one more fun. Supreme Commander 2 is much better for a quick and easy jump in and play. There is a learning curve, but it's not all that hard.

With StarCraft 2, it's a great game, but I don't feel at is as accessible for newbies such as myself to learn to play. Just very complicated with a steep learning curve, though rewarding if you like that sort of thing.

There is an OCUK steam group for Supcom2 as well, so feel free to join it and shout to us if you want to play, though for StarCraft 2 I'm not sure of the OCUK community side of things.

Starcraft 2 (+HotS) has a superb campaign, and if you're willing to put in the time to be good, it is, for my money, the greatest multiplayer game ever made. It's simply perfect.

I've always been a bit of a Starcraft fan! so I'd go with that, although, as mentioned above it can be quite daunting for new players.

My missus has recently started and finds it quite confusing with a lot to remember, but it seems if you work on certain aspects of the game at a time (baby steps) it all sort of just comes together.

Has a very good ladder system to match players of the same standard against each other as well. Which I think is very important!

Game length can vary drastically. anything between 3-5 minutes for a rush/all-in style, and up to and over an hour for the longer more macro orientated games.... ultimately though, the length of the game is totally controlled by the players.

EDIT: Great single player in both Wings Of Liberty and Heart Of The Swarm expansion :)

I can only really comment on SC2 as I have not been drawn in by SupCom.

Been playing it on and off since release. Heart of the Swarm has been brilliant, the campaigns for both have been excellent and do allow you to get used to the game.

Multiplayer has a great ladder system that does match your skill level (generally!) and allows you to get better and better. It has been the best money I have spent ion the last 3 years.

O and the competitive scene is immense. If I don't want to play I also enjoy watching pro players stream. Just keeps me coming back.

So buy it!

For the truth quoted. SupCom2 is a disasterous mess. The units look completely poor and undetailed vs the superb Forged Alliance. SupCom2 was written with consoles in mind and hugely shows. Apparently the AI issues have been resolved but Forged Alliance blows it apart.

SupCom2 is babby's first RTS.

Starcraft 2 is an actual game and is one of the few worthwhile multiplayer endeavours left. So that one.
