Hi. I'm building a Budget Gaming PC soon, and will be using an ATI Radeon HD 4870 that I have in my cupboard. Here's the specs (Ex. the 4870) :

Now, I was just wondering, how does the 4870 hold up in games nowadays, performance wise. I've been using websites like Game Debate to see how well it can run things and the results have been pretty good. Games seem to be running on med/high, even ultra on games like Saint's Row: The Third.

My question is, does this card actually perform alright on most modern games, and is it likely to be okay for games coming out on PC in the near future? I am looking to replace it at some point, but for now it's all I've got.

Many thanks.

4870 is about on par with a AMD 7750 or Nvidia 650, so I would imagine providing you are prepared to run things with sensible setting it would do ok.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. My Dad uses it in his build a couple of years back, but replaced it with a GTX 560Ti not too long ago. It's been sitting there in the cupboard since, so I thought I'd save some money by putting it to use.

Does anyone know some benchmarks for it, or whereabouts I can find some reliable ones?

Its a card that can play most games few years old on high settings since it was previously a flagship for AMD and nowadays most games on med/low. I got a 2nd PC which has it and games like Borderlands 2 and CSGO it can pretty much almost max at 1080p.

Okay, sounds good. I plan on upgrading later on to something like a 7970, replacing the PSU if needed. Maybe even a better GPU depending on the prices then.

World of Warcraft - Everything maxed except shadows and AA
Dishonoured - Everything maxed
Counter Strike Go - Everything maxed
Call Of Duty (whatever the latest one is, I just played the Steam trial) - Everything maxed

It's pretty noisy, but for a 4 year old mid level card, its held up remarkably. The 4870 will be a 10fps difference roughly compared to mine too.

i was using a 4870 512mb before upgrading to a 670. was a great card

i was able to play bf3 and metro 2033 on a mix of low - medium and with no AA
i cant provide numbers as its over a year ago

it will run latest games provided you turn the settings down

Looks pretty promising. I can't believe it hold up this well seeing as it is this old :)
